PERCIVAL :
( I didn’t tell anyone.
Nobody likes a whiner.
But it would've been nice to get a little rest.
Because of my insolence towards Kay…
I'm on kitchen duty until the end of the feast.
Or, to be more accurate, I have to follow Kay’s every order blindly. )
KAY :
Alright, peel these up for me.
( Less talking, more working, lasses.
Servants : Yes, Sir Kay! )
PERCIVAL :
( Due to the nature of his responsibilities,
Kay interacts with basically everyone in the castle.
I got to see Arthur again several times,
as well as Bedivere, and Gawain.
And seeing his mood improve by leaps and bounds whenever he’s with them…
…was definitely surprising. )
[ insert percy death glare ]
KAY :
…What?
You’re not getting out of here before you’re done.
So stop staring at me all goggle-eyed and get peeling.
?? :
Say, Kay…
BEDIVERE :
Got any lamp oil left?
KAY :
Sure, I’ll go get it for you.
BEDIVERE :
Hello, Percival. Everything alright?
PERCIVAL :
( Sir Bedivere’s presence is always welcome.
It brings a touch of sweetness to my days. )
KAY :
Here. Don’t forget to bring it back tonight.
BEDIVERE :
Mhm.
Oh, and Percival, Tristan’s going to train this afternoon.
He says you can meet him in the courtyard when you’re done.
PERCIVAL :
Okay, thank you.
PERCIVAL :
( Sir Bedivere and Sir Kay are so different, they’re almost complete opposites. )
BEDIVERE :
You’re welcome.
KAY :
Alright, get out of my kitchen, you scoundrel.
This isn't the place for you fighter types.
BEDIVERE :
Oh, and don’t forget to take out the drapes for the feast.
KAY :
Anything else, before I kick you out of here?
BEDIVERE :
Hm, no.
Wait, yes.
PERCIVAL :
( But believe it or not, they’re married. )
[ kitchen staff awws ]
KAY :
What do you think you're looking at? Back to work!
PERCIVAL :
I’ve never hated any man this much in my life.
TRISTAN :
Do you want to give the bow a try, Percival?
PERCIVAL :
Oh, sure!
DINADAN :
Tristan, I told you to wait until we're done with Fifi. You’re gonna spook her.
TRISTAN :
Speaking of which, these arrows aren’t the best, Bedivere.
BEDIVERE :
Bring your own, then.
DINADAN :
So, how’s Fifi?
BEDIVERE :
She seems fine.
She’s getting old, is all.
DINADAN :
How dare you say such a thing in front of a lady?
Don’t listen to him, girl.
BEDIVERE :
She’s going to have an increasingly harder time with long journeys.
You should start thinking about replacing her.
DINADAN :
That’s true, she's worked hard all these years.
[ fear….terror even ]
TRISTAN :
…Hm.
Maybe the bow isn't for you after all.
DINADAN :
For fuck's sake, lads, watch it!
TRISTAN :
But,
can you show me what you can do with one of these?
PERCIVAL :
( It’s been so long.
It's an odd feeling.
I’m almost…glad? )
[ everyone is surprised! ]
TRISTAN :
Oh!
Good job!
So it wasn’t a lucky shot back in the forest, then!
DINADAN :
Turns out that aside from the fact your swordsmanship still needs some work,
there’s not much else for you to learn.
MORDRED :
Yes, well…
Javelins are a peasant’s weapon. They’re not worthy of you, Percival.
BEDIVERE :
I’m not too fond of your tone right now, Mordred.
MORDRED :
P-peasants don’t fight, that's all. Well, except for the Good Knight Without Fear.
PERCIVAL :
Who?
MORDRED :
A French peasant who was given a sword on a whim, and turned out to be quite fearsome with it.
He came as reinforcements under the flag of Ban of Benwick when my uncle was crowned.
He caused quite a stir, both because of his status and his prowess in battle, and he ended up getting knighted.
I don’t know what happened to him after that, though.
DINADAN :
He became king.
MORDRED :
…A peasant turned king? You're messing with me.
DINADAN :
As a reward for his bravery and loyalty, Arthur knighted him and offered him some lands that once belonged to a disgraced king.
He gave him a charming manor house in the middle of the countryside in Estrangore,
where he raised his two sons,
Brunor and Dinadan.
MORDRED :
Excuse me?!
You’re the Good Knight Without Fear’s son?
DINADAN :
Sure am!
He’s even got his own seat at the Round Table, you know.
I doubt it’s public knowledge, though, given the situation.
There aren't too many nobles keen on the idea of accepting a commoner as one of their own.
Remember that baron we ran into on the way to Corbenic? The one who was going on about the Round Table’s peasants?
That was about my dad, Bedi, and me!
PERCIVAL :
Huh?
BEDIVERE :
Indeed.
I was only a humble stable boy from Surgales who happened to be given a sword…
…and who turned out to be more than decent at wielding it, if I do say so myself.
MORDRED :
So that’s why you talk like that, huh, Dinadan.
DINADAN :
And you haven’t even heard my dad’s incredible French accent yet.
TRISTAN :
…You look very tired, Percival.
PERCIVAL :
Ah! Sorry, I…
TRISTAN :
Is it because of what happened in Corbenic?
PERCIVAL :
…Yes.
I also feel powerlesss,
like all I can do is sit around doing nothing instead of trying to fix my mistakes.
TRISTAN :
…Have you told your brothers about this?
They could⎯
PERCIVAL :
No.
It’s… complicated right now.
And after everything that happened,
no matter what decision Arthur ends up making
Lamorak’s not going to want to bring me questing.
I’m not good enough with a sword,
and I need to be worthy of⎯
TRISTAN :
Do you want to be my squire?
PERCIVAL :
But, I…
I’m Lamorak’s squire?
TRISTAN :
If your brothers agree, you could officially become mine! Just ask them!
That way, you can go on the Grail Quest with me for sure!
AGLOVALE :
Absolutely not.
Mind you, I have nothing against Tristan.
But I was our father’s squire, Lamorak was mine,
and you’re his.
PERCIVAL :
I⎯
AGLOVALE :
You have much to learn from your brother.
Squiring for another knight would make a stir.
LAMORAK :
Are you disappointed I’m not as lenient as Tristan, is that it?
AGLOVALE :
Don’t start, Lamorak.
LAMORAK :
This is my business too, isn’t it?
AGLOVALE :
I didn’t ask for your opinion.
PERCIVAL :
Listen, I⎯
AGLOVALE :
So you’ll be Lamorak’s squire, and that's the last I'll hear of it.
PERCIVAL :
…No.
AGLOVALE :
…No?
I don’t think you quite understand how things work around here.
PERCIVAL :
If you’d only listen to me⎯
AGLOVALE :
I’m your eldest brother and your king.
You’re going to listen to me.
I learned weeks after the fact that Dinadan lied to me,
that you were put in mortal danger,
and that when you finally reached Corbenic,
you threw yourself headfirst into the dungeons without a second thought.
And since you came back, you’ve been cold, you've hardly spoken at all.
Am I supposed to keep guessing at what’s going on with you and go along with your whims without question,
when they go against our customs?
PERCIVAL :
And how am I supposed to know that?
I… I’ve got to guess at these things too.
The countryside in Norgales was all I’d ever known.
Mother’s lands, the forest, the mountains…
We spoke Welsh at home,
and the most people I ever saw at once were at the weddings of Mother’s folks.
And one day you show up,
tell me I’m your brother,
and that all of this is only part of the truth, if not a straight up lie.
And I believed you.
I followed you.
I left everything I knew behind.
And you want me to become a knight as quickly as I can.
So I'm trying my best, but it’s not enough for you.
And I don’t know why,
because I don’t know anything.
Nothing about Britain,
or knighthood,
our family,
or our father.
I don’t even know anything about you.
You’re like strangers to me.
AGLOVALE :
Perciv⎯
PERCIVAL :
And you don’t know me either!
You only knew the baby I used to be.
And now you expect me to know everything and be just the way you remember me to be!
But all I’ve done up until now was fail!
Again,
and again.
And my last mistake was disastrous, but we're not doing anything about it except wait for a fucking feast!
LAMORAK :
Alright, that’s enough, you⎯
Percival!
Percival, get back here!
AGLOVALE :
Wait, you’re still wounded —
…Damn it.
PERCIVAL :
( I need
to go, I
need… )
?? :
Young Percival?
ARTHUR :
Where are you headed in such a hurry?
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
A seneschal’s duties vary from era to era and from country to country
Kay’s job makes him master of the house in Camelot.
KAY :
Arthur may be king, but this is my castle.
He manages the staff, the residents’ accommodations, the kitchens, the meals, etc.
He’s a very good cook himself! And a bit of a tyrant with his subordinates…
KAY :
Where’s the damn lamb sauce? My grandmother would do a better job of it, and she’s dead!
