DINADAN :
Looks like it can’t see us.
TRISTAN :
Should we attack it?
[ the creature looks around ]
DINADAN :
Tristan, have you seen the size of this thing?
That, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to attack us.
Better not to try anything.
TRISTAN :
…True. Let’s back off.
[ percy starts to glow. the creature whirls around towards them. ]
TRISTAN :
Din!
DINADAN :
Go and take Percy somewhere safe, I’ll handle this!
TRISTAN :
Got it!
DINADAN :
[ the creature tries to bypass him. ]
Oh no you don’t⎯
( No matter what I do…
It’s completely ignoring me.
It really does want to follow them.
Good thing they must be out of here by n⎯ )
What are y⎯
TRISTAN :
Din!
( Does it not feel pain?!
How…?
And with the state of my arm… )
[ tristan accidentally lets go of his sword. ]
DINADAN :
TRISTAN!
[ the creature crumbles to the floor. ]
TRISTAN :
Are you hurt?
DINADAN :
I’ll live… You?
TRISTAN :
Same here…
DINADAN :
It had to happen while we were without armor, too…
TRISTAN :
Do you think he’s alright?
DINADAN :
He doesn’t look wounded, at least…
PELLES :
Where is the Grail?
TRISTAN, DINADAN :
The what?
PELLES :
The cup.
The artifact on the altar.
…
So it failed…
DINADAN :
Failed?
TRISTAN :
What are you talking about?
What does it have to do with the giant in your dungeons?
DINADAN :
That wasn’t a giant, Tristan.
TRISTAN :
What else could it be?
DINADAN :
No, giants were never that tall, it’s⎯
PELLES :
That thing is my father,
Pellam, King of Corbenic.
TRISTAN :
Pellam…?
Was your father cursed?
PELLES :
Yes… No…
It’s complicated.
Did you see him die?
TRISTAN :
My sword went through his skull.
[ pelles sits. ]
PELLES :
That wasn't my question.
Did you see him die?
TRISTAN :
He collapsed right in front of our eyes.
There’s no way he could have survived, cursed or not.
PELLES :
The Grail may work many wonders.
TRISTAN :
(annoyed)
Aren’t you going to explain what this all means?
Did you take Percival there by force?
PELLES :
I’ll admit I steered him towards that place for self-serving reasons.
I desperately needed him to remedy the quagmire I've found myself in.
…
Calm down, sir knight.
To raise a blade against one’s host is dishonorable.
TRISTAN :
So is manipulating one’s guests. Explain yourself.
PELLES :
The Grail is…
a magical artifact that has been in my family's care for countless generations, and so ancient that many details have been lost to time.
It brings wealth and plenty to the isle of Britain.
It is thanks to the Grail that crops flourish and livestock thrives.
But, just like any magical artifact…
…it requires a steady pool of life force in order to function.
That is our family's role, as guardians of the Grail.
We sacrifice our flesh, our bodies…
…and become the thing you saw in order to feed the Grail.
DINADAN :
(suspicious)
Let's say you’re telling the truth.
If that monster is indeed your father and the Grail’s current guardian, why have your lands been left to waste for so long?
Ten years without plenty is a long time to go when you're purportedly in the possession of an item that’s supposed to do just that.
PELLES :
We are not immortal.
My father was the guardian.
But years went by, the Grail kept drawing on his life force…
…and he began to sink into what the most ancient members of my family call the Grail madness.
In other words, the Grail corrupted his very being, and became less powerful as a result.
It was time for him to be replaced.
But complications arose, ones that made it impossible to find him a successor,
which compromised the prosperity of the whole of Britain.
When I saw that boy, I saw…
an opportunity.
TRISTAN :
( perplexed )
Why him? Why not one of us?
DINADAN :
…It’s because he’s Pellinore’s son, isn’t it?
PELLES :
Yes.
For Pellinore of Wales married my sister,
Briane of Corbenic.
Tradition demands that a child of Corbenic be the Grail’s guardian.
DINADAN :
Wait, tradition?
So it’s not a requirement?
You waited for a descendant of your bloodline because of tradition?
PELLES :
Tradition, and morality.
Do you believe it simple and honorable to grant the sacrifice of a lifetime to just anybody?
DINADAN :
Clearly, it’s much easier to manipulate a kid to force him to make that sacrifice
without letting him know what he’s about to do.
TRISTAN :
Din…
He’s not waking up.
What’s happening to him, Pelles?
PELLES :
…That, I do not know.
You must understand, I took no joy in manipulating him.
We need a guardian.
DINADAN :
( outraged )
Why not you, then?
Why place all your bets on a complete stranger
when you could’ve solved the issue yourself long ago?
?? :
It’s simple, little Din.
MERLIN :
It’s because Pelles is much too old, on top of being a coward, obviously.
EVERYONE :
Merlin?!
MERLIN :
Hello, lads.
You look awful.
It’s been a while, hasn't it?
PELLES :
Merlin, why have you come here and now?
Everything would have gone smoothly if you’d been here to perform the ritual, wouldn’t it?
MERLIN :
You made your choices, Pelles.
Don’t blame your failures on my lateness.
DINADAN :
Merlin, you knew about this?
Does Arthur know too?
MERLIN :
Arthur doesn’t know anything. For now.
He’ll need some convincing…probably.
He can be so very stubborn, after all… Hm.
TRISTAN :
Convincing?
Convincing to do what?
MERLIN :
Why, to proclaim the start of the Grail quest, of course.
ROUND TABLE TRIVIA
DINADAN :
Why did you come back after leaving Percy at the entrance??
TRISTAN :
I was worried about you!
DINADAN :
Tristan, you’re wounded.
TRISTAN :
And still better than you with a sword.
DINADAN :
…
That’s true. You did the right thing.
( Difficult to offend. )
You’d better stop being so annoying, though. <3
