ISEULT :
Careful, Percival!
Belladonna is very toxic.
Don’t touch it with your bare hands, or you’ll get a bad rash.
PERCIVAL :
Why grow it at all, then, if it can hurt you?
ISEULT :
It can also be used for its healing virtues. Any substance can become harmful,
for it is the dose that makes the poison.
PERCIVAL :
And how much does it take for belladonna to become poison?
ISEULT :
About twenty berries, I’d say.
But it’s different for each person.
Tristan would have a different reaction from you or me, for instance. One can become accustomed to poisons through repeated exposure.
PERCIVAL :
Oh! Is it because Tristan was poisoned by Morholt’s sword?
ISEULT :
…
Mark told you about it, didn’t he?
PERCIVAL :
He told me about the duel between Tristan and Morholt, when Ireland came to demand a tribute from Cornwall.
He didn’t go into the details.
ISEULT :
I’m not surprised.
He must still be ashamed.
Well, that’s when I first met Tristan.
I fed him the antidote and watched over him as he healed.
PERCIVAL :
But…
Wasn’t Morholt your uncle?
Even so, you tended to his…
…murderer?
ISEULT :
Humans are strange creatures, aren’t they?
PERCIVAL :
( Since I arrived in Tintagel a few weeks ago,
I’ve spent most of my time with Dame Iseult, by her own request.
Her enthusiasm and her passion keep me from drifting into…
…my darker thoughts.
Even more so when Sir Tristan’s made himself scarce.
I don’t know what he and Mark told each other, or what decision they came to,
but I think that is the reason why Tristan’s so often off elsewhere.
I’ve learned much about plants, thanks to Dame Iseult,
and about Cornwall…
…thanks to Mark.
He offered to tutor me soon after I arrived. )
MARK :
Cornwall’s main industry is agriculture,
all thanks to its fertile lands and plains.
[ he hobbles over to the desk. ]
Do you have any questions?
PERCIVAL :
…
How did that happen? Your leg?
MARK :
…You’re rather curious about inconsequential matters.
[ he takes a seat. ]
I was wounded during the siege of Tintagel.
It did not heal well. That’s all there is to it.
PERCIVAL :
But you’re not a knight.
MARK :
I didn’t say I fought in it.
Anything else on this topic, before we get back to the lesson?
PERCIVAL :
…
Why wage war on Gorlois?
Everyone keeps telling me about bloodlines, about families and why they matter…
So why do illegitimate monarchs try and rule anyway?
Why suddenly decide you had a right to it?
MARK :
…
You don’t mince your words, do you.
Let’s say…
When I was about your age, I spent much of my time reading.
As I did, I discovered that very long ago, my family
was Cornwall’s main royal line.
Gorlois’ was a minor branch of that dynasty.
But Gorlois’ incompetence
is what led us - Tristan’s parents, and myself - to form a faction to oppose him.
The centuries between my family’s reign and Gorlois’ did much to weaken my claim…
…and here we are.
PERCIVAL :
But there’s a flaw in that reasoning, isn’t there?
If both your families are from the same dynasty, then
how can you tell which one belongs on the throne?
MARK :
[ sighs ]
Now there’s an interesting question.
PERCIVAL :
( The more I learn, the more confused I get. But despite myself, I think…
…I enjoy learning from Mark. )
ISEULT :
Great!
Please help me up.
We’re all done with this row! I’ll ask the servants to bring⎯
[ SPLASH! ]
PERCIVAL :
…
ISEULT :
…Oh.
Oh, no.
[ anyway! ]
MORGAN :
You see, Guinevere…
It’s because I care for you that I never attacked you. I couldn’t help but see myself in you…
…I don’t want any harm to come to you.
GUINEVERE :
…
I know you’re angry, Morgan.
But revealing Mordred’s parentage would only push you further away from the throne, wouldn’t it? Since Gawain’s is officially Arthur’s heir…
…the assumption Mordred belongs to the Orkney clan is your only tie to it.
MORGAN :
…
I don’t want his parentage to come to light.
If it were up to me, I’d be at Mordred’s side
when Merlin’s prophecy comes to be.
But whether I like it or not, I don’t think
such a thing can happen without bringing consequences down on those I wish to spare.
…
Yet we must do all we can to limit the casualties, don’t we?
GUINEVERE :
Must you leave so soon?
MORGAN :
I’d rather not find out what would happen
if Arthur were to learn I was here.
But please, take some time to think about it.
Do you really have to go back to him?
[ she rides off into the woods. ]
MORGAN :
Go.
To Camelot.
Bring him the news. Tell him
that his sweet Guinevere
is being threatened by the wicked Morgan le Fay.
