A Pugh chart is a quantitative technique used to rank the multi-dimensional options of an option set. And most importantly, it is not weighted to allow a quick selection process. It is named after Stuart Pugh who was a professor and head of the design division at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
Suppose you were to planning a SCUBA diving trip for the Winter Break. Your options are: The Maldives, Dubai, Fujairah, and Dibba. In order to make an informed decision, you decide to score the different locations on a 5 point scale, with a 5 being the best possible.
Your chart may look like the one on the right.
Based on the scoring system and the criteria, Dibba scores the highest. Therefore, you might choose to travel there.
For your protective device, you will be making a Pugh Chart of the different designs that you sketch.
