How the eye resolves images:
Light from a point source passes into the eye through the pupil, is focused by the lens onto the retina where light sensitive cells detect the light and send information to the brain via the optic nerve.
The resolving power of the eye
The resolving power of the eye is its ability to see detail in an image. Can you determine the spacing of the rods and cones of the eye?
..
Quantitative Experimentation:
How far away do you need to be before you cannot distinguish between the two dots?
Describe some measurements you might need to make.
Two points are resolved if the principal maxima of one diffraction pattern coincides with the first minima of the other.
These two images can be used to diagram the path light takes from your screen to your eye. Add the measurements you have/could take to the diagrams.
The normal pupil size in adults varies from 2 to 4 mm in diameter in bright light to 4 to 8 mm in the dark. The pupils are generally equal in size.
Based on your measurements and an 'idealized' model of a human eye, determine the spacing of the rods responsible for resolving images on the surface of the retina.
Please include any assumptions you made in your calculation.
