The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) helps eligible New York residents pay tuition at certain NYS colleges. Students can receive an ANNUAL TAP award of up to $5,665 to cover their tuition. TAP is considered a grant, so it does not have to be paid back!
TAP is available for students attending a SUNY, CUNY and not-for-profit independent degree-granting college on a part-time basis.
The easiest way to apply to TAP is through the FAFSA! If you did not do so, and you are attending a NYS TAP-eligible school, then you will receive a link to apply via email. Most information from the FAFSA will be transferred over to the TAP, or re-asked on your TAP application for aid.
TAP has income limits that must be met in order to qualify. If you don't meet these limits, then you might not qualify for TAP (however, you might qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship).
When you fill out TAP, you will be asked to put your school's code. You can easily find this code by googling it.
When you initially fill out TAP, you might have put a school different from what you are going to attend because of your admissions decision or application status. If this is the case, make sure you return to your TAP application and update your TAP code with the college you will be attending and have accepted an offer to!

You can qualify for part-time TAP if you are registered for 6-11 credits per semester. One way to qualify is completing the regular full-time TAP application (instructions above), and awaiting a notification from your school about your eligibility to receive part-time TAP awards.
To be eligible for part-time TAP, a student only needs to complete two consecutive, full-time semesters once to be eligible for Part-Time TAP. Students must also maintain a minimum "C" average throughout their part-time course of study.
Because TAP is offered to U.S.-eligible students, the Senator José Peralta New York Dream Act is an alternative to TAP in the sense that it is available to undocumented students who are otherwise NOT eligible for TAP or FAFSA
