Class registration is the most important task you should complete before the semester begins! If you have not yet registered for classes please (and if you can) do so now and use this page along with the tools and resources on this website to help you!
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need help! I can help you schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor.
These classes do not meet. In most cases, the professor will give you the work online and you will complete it by a certain deadline. Because the professor won’t be available during a live session, you are responsible for contacting your professor if you are confused
These classes meet on Zoom or in-person. They are scheduled at fixed times each week, so you must show up to class, do the work, and take all of the exams (if any). The professor and your classmates will be available, either during live sessions, or during in-person meetings
These classes meet on Zoom during most class lectures, but also meet in person during exam days or lab days (depending on the professor and the subject of the class). The professor will be available during live sessions, or in-person during in-person meetings
All schools have a specific way for students to enroll into classes! Please familiarize yourself with your university system's portals and/or process to register for classes.
Your first step should ALWAYS be to consult your advisor! Please find out who your advisor is and get ahold of their contact information.
If you do not know who your advisor is, please visit your school's website to find all faculty information. You can search up your major on the website and find a list of faculty members in that department who can either help you or redirect you to the chairperson of the program.
You should also have a general plan before enrolling! This way, you can register for the classes that you want/need when the registration period begins, which significantly reduces your chances of being waitlisted or re-arranging your entire schedule. You can also make a copy of this template of a spreadsheet I use to organize my courses throughout the college enrollment!
That is, before your enrollment date (think of this as a Black Friday sale!), have the classes you want in your shopping cart ready to be registered for! This way you avoid the burden of missing the deadline or being waitlisted for classes that you need.
You can find who your advisor is on CUNYFirst (if you are a CUNY student) by logging in going to Student Center > Academic Records > Advisor
Please keep in mind that to receive TAP aid, you need to be registered as a full-time student, which is equivalent to 12 credits or more.
To receive aid from the NYS Excelsior Scholarship, you need to have at least 30 credits per semester.
*If you are in a special opportunity program, you may be entitled to early registration*
Once you have consulted your advisor, you can begin the registration process!
The best way to register yourself for classes is to have an organized plan or spreadsheet that lays down all of the classes you have taken and need to take. Creating such a list or spreadsheet can also help you break down tuition costs, the number of credits you need per semester to meet your financial aid requirements, and the pre-requisites/co-requisites you will need to access a certain class.
Do not overbook yourself! It will be your first semester, so try not to register for more than 5 classes. College classes are more rigorous than high school classes!
If you have already consulted with your advisor and they said they would be the ones registering you for your classes, do not take further action! You should still stay in contact with them to ensure that the classes you are being registered for are requirements for your degree. Please make sure you have their contact information prior to ending any meeting with them so that you can reach out with more questions!
After you register for your classes you should begin looking for textbooks that you might need for your classes. However, if these books are not cheap or free, please do not purchase them until you see your syllabus or attend your first day of class!
You can also create a WhatsApp group chat with classmates you are registered with to talk about course-related materials, deadline, or hold study sessions. For CUNY students whose classes take place on Blackboard, you can send an email to your classmates with a WhatsApp group invite link (here is a video I made that shows you how you can do this!).
After enrolling into your classes, remember to obtain your ID card! Without it you will not be able to access your school's campus and attend your in-person classes.
