The Spring semester at ALL 4-year CUNY Colleges
begins Wednesday, August 28th
To verify this, please search up your school's 2024-25 Academic calendar to confirm when the first day of class will be
Note: the last day to add a course to your schedule at most 4-year CUNY schools is September 3rd
The Spring semester at SOME CUNY community colleges also begins August 28th (except LaGCC and KBCC, which begins on September 5th instead)
To make sure of this, please search up your school's 2024-25 Academic Calendar to confirm when the first day of classes will be
Note: the last day to add a course to your schedule at LaGCC and KBCC is September 11th
CUNY Schedule Builder is the tool you use to register for your classes. To access CUNY Schedule Builder, log in to CUNYFirst, click on Student Center, and then click on Schedule Builder
The video on the left provides you with great detail on how to use Schedule Builder to register for your classes
Before you are given access to CUNY Schedule Builder as the rest of the population of CUNY students, you can also refer to the CUNY Global Class Search to know what classes will be available that term, and what time(s).
Note: the CUNY Class Search Tool is not entirely accurate and some class meeting times are subject to change
You can also see what professors are assigned to teaching the course, and more information prior to seeing them on Schedule Builder. This gives you a head start and minimizes the possibility of being wait-listed for the courses you need to graduate!
You can register for classes according to the Enrollment Appointment date listed on the home page of CUNY Schedule Builder. This date is different for most people, depending on the student's grade level, and/or their affiliation with a special opportunity program
Here, you can see when you are allowed to register for the schedule you had in your shopping cart. In this case, this student was allowed to register for their classes since May 4th, and will be unable to register for any more after August
The Enroll Appointment also tells you how many credits you are allowed to take. In this case, this student is allowed to take no more than 17.5 credits for this semester!
15 credits is CUNY's suggested number of credits to stay on track for graduation. Do not overbook yourself!
Similarly, to qualify for aid like Excelsior or TAP, you need to meet a certain number of credits.
For TAP, you must have at least 12 credits, so make sure you register for enough classes to meet or exceed this amount!
ALWAYS HAVE YOUR CLASSES READY BEFORE YOUR ENROLLMENT DATE! That is, before your enrollment date (think of this as a Black Friday sale!), have the classes you want in your shopping cart ready to be registered for! This way you avoid the burden of missing the deadline or being waitlisted for classes that you need
Please also note that some classes you need special permission to access and enroll in. If you see this note, please contact you advisor, or someone from the department of the class you will be taking so that they can grant you permission for taking the class
Using CUNY DegreeWorks to help you register for your classes is key! DegreeWorks serves as a tool or checklist that provides you with your degree progress, and the number of classes/credits you have left to take to graduate
DegeeWorks can also be used to check how many credits you have in total (including transfer credits), your GPA, and more!
DegreeWorks can be easily accessed at degreeworks.cuny.edu. You can also use this tool simultaneously as you register for your classes on Schedule Builder, or simply apply the still-needed available classes for that term directly to your Schedule Builder shopping cart
Try to prioritize classes that are required for your major/degree program, and leave the electives for last. However, do not overbook yourself with too many classes!
Please refer to the videos on the left for more insight on DegreeWorks and how to utilize it
You can view the classes you are registered for by going to CUNYFirst > Student Center > Schedule Builder to see all of the courses you are going to attend that week
You can also look at the Meeting Information of the class (including who the professor is, once it is assigned, the meeting times and days, and more) by going to CUNYFirst > Student Center > Course Planning and Enrollment > 2024 Fall Term
You can then click on each class and view the Class Details, Enrollment Information and Meeting Information to learn more about each course!
The video to the right demonstrates how you add, drop and swap classes. Please note that dropping and/or swapping a class for another one will result in a $18 fee to your tuition if it is done after the semester start date!
If you plan on replacing a class for another, do not just drop the class and then add the other one at a later date (as you will be charged a lot more than the $18). Remember to swap! CUNY Schedule Builder will detect this when you perform the "drop class" and "add class" actions
If you are a student who is planning on rearranging their schedule, including dropping a class, please keep in mind the CUNY Tuition Refund Dates:
Before classes start (August 27th) = 100% tuition refunded
Within 1st week of class (September 3rd) = 75% tuition refunded
Within 2nd week of class (September 10th) = 50% tuition refunded
Within 3rd week of class (September 17th) = 25% tuition refunded
When dropping your classes, make sure you drop all of them at once! Some campuses charge a fee of $15-20 each time a student decides to drop a class!
These deadlines are also different at LaGuardia and Kingsborough Community College, so verify this on their respective academic calendar
If you are student who plans to rearrange or drop some classes in their schedule, please drop your classes responsibly! Here is what can appear on your college transcripts once you decide to drop your classes:
WD or W = Official Withdrawal
Given to students who correctly dropped/withdrew from their classes
Does not impact GPA
This option is only available until November 6
WN = Never Withdraw
Given to students who never attend their first day of class and does not officially withdraw from the course
Does not impact GPA
WU = Unofficial Withdraw
Given to students who attend one or more days of classes and never officially withdrew
DOES impact GPA = weighed as an 'F' on your college transcript!
