Best known for her practice premised on materials and innovation, artist Jane Lee examines the way paintings are constructed by reinventing its very characteristic and form. In Solid Turn Liquid, she deconstructs paint to a sculptural end with two unconventionally draped canvases of enmeshed paint that allude, via their connecting puddle, that the colour of one has travelled across the floor to arrive at another. It is this process of transfiguration that she wishes to highlight via her dissolution of painting into form, material and concept. Jane alters our archetypal perception of the lone and formal painting to be hung framed on a wall, as her work is a painting that gains its meaning from the space it occupies (the puddle on the floor and both walls, viewed collectively) and the production process, not to mention the concept behind it
Bricolage Meaning Paragraph
I have always really loved music. I have been playing guitar ever since I was a kid and although I am not the best player, I am good enough to feel like I can affect the music I play as much as it sometimes affects me. I am not going to act like every song that I play has a deep meaning behind it but more often than not, when I am playing my guitar it is because I am going through something mentally, either good or bad, that I cannot fully put a finger on yet. Sometimes playing songs can tie into whatever I am feeling and word it better than I ever could. Other times I am simply trying to get away from whatever is going on and distract myself with another atmosphere. That escapism is what inspired this piece. The guitar used is one of my earlier guitars and was the one that I had when I started taking music more seriously so it has definitely been used multiple times figure out my life. I wanted it to feel like these garden gnomes live in their peaceful world and normally you cannot see them, but when you play music they suck you in and allow you to join their sanctuary even if it is only for three and a half minutes.
Art21 Artist Paragraph
The Art21 artist that I decided to write this paragraph about in Louise Bourgeois. Her artwork is rather interesting. All of these art 21 artists create in thousands of different mediums about a million different topics. While Louise's artwork is with commonly used medium the way that she arranges the pieces makes the artwork interesting. The fact that when some of her pieces are on display there is only a small opening that you can look through to see the work is very purposeful. You always want to stray away from people just glancing at your work and walking away before truly looking at it. By having the artwork only visible through a small opening, it forces the viewer to step closer to the piece and gets them enthralled in the scene.
5 Random Word Narrative
My words were: happy, bat, surprise, whisper, and signal
There was a bat and it was their birthday. They thought all of their friends had forgotten about it. But secretly they were waiting in the bat's house waiting for him to return. Once the porch lights turned on, all of the bats knew that the signal had happened and they were all whispering to each other to get ready. As soon as he walked through his door the bat was greeted with a big surprise birthday party will all of his friends.
Artist Paragraph
The artist I have chosen to focus on is Anila Quayyum Agha. She is a Pakistani-American artist whose main form of art is through laser cut wood. She creates these intricate patterns digitally and they have thin sheets of wood laser cut to said pattern. After all of the wood is cut, she assembles them into three dimensional basic form like a cube or pyramid. For installation she hangs up the forms and puts a single light bulb in the middle which casts the pattern across the entire room, enveloping viewers in the artwork. One of her installations, Intersections, was part of Art Prize 2014 in Grand Rapids and she was the first – band so far only – person to win both the Jury and the public prizes.
Embodiment Paragraph
I am a rock. I sit amongst others in a patch beside a sidewalk. We all look different. I am not the biggest but I am not a tiny pebble either. I am a rock. I am completely smooth instead of being jagged like others. My color is close to a terracotta pot except my color is not flat like those pots. Mine is more unique. I have spots. I am special. But not as special as the rock sitting next to me. That rock was taken away for a few days before it was returned. When the rock came back it looked every different. Instead of the muted color selection that most of the rocks pick from, this rock was bright blue with random curly edged white shapes. It is beautiful. That rock glistens in the sun. Lots of people look over in our direction because of that rock. But they are only looking at them not me. I wish I would be chosen to get a make over. But no one would pick two rocks next to each other.
