Hello! My name is Dominic, this is my 1st year at GVSU and I'm undecided on a major. I have an interest in design (Clothing, architecture, industrial). I run Cross country for the team and before I moved here I was working on my pilots license. I am from Colorado. I also really like rock climbing!
Embodiment piece:
Hey, I'm Dom and I am a pair of sunglasses. I guess I'll tell you a bit about myself and how I spend my time. Right now I'm in some ones truck just chillin. It's night time. I don't go out much at night I really am more of a daytime object. I travel quite often. I've seen white sand beaches and rocky mountains and everything in-between. When I'm not out traveling I'm chillin in my case. Being a pair of sunglasses is alright. I make people look cool or mysterious, or I protect their eyes from the sand. I'm no hero I'm just a chill object. Eventually I'll break though. A broken lens, hinge, or bridge would do it. I could be taped together but then I wont look cool. Even if I never break eventual I will degrade into dust. Lenses first probably. My plastic and metal construction should last a few hundred thousand years, but until then I'm looking forward to seeing the coast of Italy from a yacht. I'm not sure if every pair of sunglasses gets to see what I see because we all have different shaped lenses and tints and opportunities. Each pair probably has a different perspective.

Bricolage: I made a shoe from cross country racing bibs I've collected over the years. It's all pinned together with safety pins. The sole of the shoe is a foam midsole from a brooks shoe. The bib on the front of the shoe has the brooks logo because they sponsored the meet that I got that bib from. All the logos are interesting to me because they are running related and remind me of race cars and all the sponsorships they have. I also think the numbers add a racing element to the shoe. How ever the shoe resembles a loafer more than a spike or running shoe. So perhaps it can be worn as a formal shoe (yes the shoe is wearable). The last element of the shoe is the spikes/ nails. I hammered them through the sole. I'm not to sure how I feel about them so I leave it up to you guys to decide what they mean. One thing I had planned for the shoe was to add sponge to it. The material was too hard to work with. With I applies glue to the sponge it soaked it up deep into it and so i would have to use an immense amount of glue to get it to stick to anything so I just scrapped that part. I think that it was still important to the creative process because if I didn't have the sponge idea i would not have had any of the other ideas. It was the spark I needed to start the shoe.
With the reflection it reminds me of castle walls.
Art Installation: My group decided to work with yarn. I didn't like the idea at first I thought it was too simple. After seeing it installed I think it actually captured a strange effect. Depending in the Hight you are the project can look totally different. For example if looked at from head on there only appears to be one "X" of yarn and its on a 2D plain. But at different heights you can see there is more yarn and Xs make more Xs in a very geometrical way. Its interesting to see the ratios change as you move your head around.
As for a meaning of the piece it's hard to come up for one. It definitely incites curiosity in me and makes me wonder. Perhaps it says something more about yourself than the piece. Everyone's perspective on it will be different and personal. I also think there is something to be said about the red exit sign in the back. It's almost like the installation is saying "No exit".
