Review of what is needed before Final Exam Day (week of the 12th - we judge our booklets, winner gets a prize)For your final grade I will need to see on your website:

an Image of your final bricolage object project
Installation Artist Research (including 5 separate images and a favorite)
One written Paragraph on your group installation project including a title and a meaning for the work.
Documentation of Group Installation Project (2 of the best photos)
Export your Curatorial Booklet into JPEGs (with page spreads selected) and upload to your page as an "image carousel"

we travel to the Bins! Goodwill Outlet on Prairie Street in Granville. During class last time I described our selection process for readymade objects in terms of either their ability to make us think of an action (think Janine Antoni's rope), or color(Nick Cave's Thrifted Objects), nostalgic connotation (think Tracy Emin's Bed), or even simply the way an arrangement of objects play together through shape alone. For this thrifting session I want you to pick out objects or textiles based on their potential to be art making material in the best sense that you can think of, taking inspiration from artists we've looked at in class. Use what we have acquired! We will talk about object plasticity, slipperiness, cleverness, functional vs useless, temporality, and last but not least probably... construction techniques.

be talking about container theory and objects and subjects

For the first class today I lecture on the continuation of readymade objects (think Duchamp's fountain) into things made by artists today, and then into the idea of wrapping or coating or covering or concealing, otherwise homogenizing objects. Erwin Wurm's one-minute sculptures 1) 2) 3), Meret Oppenheim's fur cup again, an art 21 on Michael Rakowitz the "haunting ghost" of artifacts that occurs when you recreate "the living" in a different form. For next class 1) I am having students write a short paragraph on a contemporary artist of your choice, and 2) find a small object (think claes oldenburg) and hold it at arm's length and take a photo of it trying to make it appear like a large object in space. this can be tricky with blurring so try to make it as least blurry as possible.
