Defogger
Scyther is a versatile Pokemon in the October metagame and is one of the only few hazard removal options in the tier. Possessing STAB U-turn to pivot out of its checks such as Sandaconda and Rhydon, Scyther can find itself coming in multiple times a game in order to get rid of hazards for its teammates like Honchkrow, Gengar and Hisuian Zoroark. Dual Wingbeat is Scyther's strongest STAB option which is also boosted in power by its ability Technician, allowing Scyther to deal with Pokemon like Amoonguss and frailer, slower threats like Honchkrow and Emboar. Roost keeps Scyther healthy throughout the game and improves its longevity. A full HP Scyther will also be able to keep an Swords Dance boosted Bisharp in check with Close Combat. Close Combat can be used over Roost to actually threaten opposing Steels like Bisharp and Perrserker.
Despite its utility, Scyther is still kept in check by defensive walls like Sandaconda, whose Rocky Helmet chips down Scyther, affecting it significantly if it is not running Roost. Dual Wingbeat also procs Rocky Helmet twice as a multi-hit move, meaning it's taking a lot of damage. Scyther is also threatened by faster pokemon like Alolan Dugtrio using Stone Edge or Noivern using Hurricane. Overall, Scyther's cons are outweighed by its positives and it's one of the most useful pokemon in the format.
Swords Dance Sweeper
Swords Dance Scyther is a dangerous sweeper in the October metagame thanks to its high Speed and access to strong attacks to threaten OHKOs on most of the tier. Dual Wingbeat again is Scyther's strongest Flying-type move boosted by Technician and most offensive threats in the tier will be OHKOd by it at +2 like Porygon-Z, Clawitzer and Emboar. Trailblaze is Scyther's option to boost its Speed for a sweep and also targets its biggest check in Rhydon, who is OHKOd at +2. Close Combat targets the Steels like the aforementioned Bisharp
