Utility
Webs:
Slurpuff has a unique role of being the only non-bug type to have access to the move Sticky Webs. Webs are one of the best hazards and are usually restrained by being on mons with poor defensive typings (bug). Slurpuff however has the amazing typing of Fairy.
Heal Bell/Aromatherapy:
With bulky mons like Goodra, Alomamola, Ferrothorn, and 2 separate Rotom forms, status from moves like toxic, will-o-wisp, and scald are very common occurrences. Slurpuff is one of three heal bell users in the meta; The other two are Lilligant and Flareon, both respectable mons but lack a good defensive type and the coverage moves that Slurpuff has.
Wish:
While Alomamola is the poster child of Wish passing to allies with its whooping 165 base hp, Slurpuff also has a good niche of passing wishes with its respectable 82 base HP. While you will mostly click wish to heal yourself it can be extremely useful when paired with partners like Rotom-heat and Goodra who are bulky Pokemon that lack reliable recovery themselves.
Status Spreader:
Slurpuff can run two very good status moves Yawn and Toxic. Both of which are great at denying setup sweepers or other walls from just sitting on you. Yawn allows for a lot of free setup whether it’s to webs/wish/attack on the switch or to allow your own mons a safe switch in. Toxic allows slurpuff to beat a lot of tanks (with the exception of Ferrothorn and Rapidash-Galar) By just spamming moves like wish heal bell and draining kiss.
Offense
Belly Drum:
Probably Slurpuff’s most infamous set in pokemon is its unburden Belly Drum set. This set allows slurpuff to outspeed most Pokemon including scarfers and attack with powerful play roughs. If this set is so good why wouldn’t it be the first thing I mention? The main shortcoming it has is the defensive mons of the meta. Alomamola can come in and toxic it while tanking a hit after belly drum. Dondozo ignores all stat changes with unaware and makes it difficult for slurpuff to sweep. Ferrothorn resists the stab play rough and forces slurpuff to use moves like drain punch when it already has a hard time slotting moves for all the other walls. Slurpuff can still sweep with belly drum but it’s not as easy with a lot of the defensive mons in the tier.
HO Lead:
Sticky Webs are usually seen on a lot of hyper offense leads. Slurpuff makes great use of its ability and move pool to allow for a strong opening. With focus sash, endeavor, and unburden you have pseudo F.E.A.R strategy where you anticipate an attack, get brought down to focus sash, endeavor, and KO with a move like play rough. This also allows you to still get webs up after the opponent has died since you still have your unburden boost or get off a suicide move like misty explosion to deny a pivot/spin.
Special Attacking:
While belly drum Slurpuff fails to have good enough coverage, special slurpuff has great coverage with moves like thunderbolt, flamethrower, surf, energy ball, and psychic along with draining kiss/dazzling gleam, slurpuff can flip a lot of the defensive matchups it would struggle with normally. Thunderbolt allows you to take out both Alomomola and Dondozo in 2 hits. Surf lets you 2hko Rotom-heat. Fairy stab lets you stay in on the specially defensive wall of the tier Goodra (if it doesn’t have sludge bomb as coverage). Flamethrower lets you 2HKO Ferrothorn as well. While it doesn’t sweep using a special set, it provides valuable damage on defensive threats and can still work well into offensive mons with unburden+sitrus berry.
Calm Mind:
Calm mind is a set that requires careful positioning. It has all the benefits of what I stated above but gets rid of some utility moves and replaces them with offensive pressure. Being able to calm mind boost and get an unburden boost allows Slurpuff to beat most mons of the meta. It does struggle to use every coverage move that it wants so make sure to team build accordingly.
Matchups
Favorable Matchups
Gallade:
Physically defensive slurpuff can always switch in on any of Gallades moves and proc a sitrus berry to outspeed if it clicks psycho cut. 168 attack EVs it can guarantee a OHKO in return. Though fully defensive allows for more longevity if Gallade switches and is more useful into other matchups as well. Since most Gallades run life orb, you still have a good chance of dropping Gallade even without investment in attack with a Play Rough. Keep in mind these calcs are for non bulky variations of gallade.
Pawmot:
The Pawmot matchup is very similar to gallade. You can live any set as long as you have enough physical bulk and can return with a OHKO, though you would need more attack investment to guarantee a kill if it isn’t chipped by life orb.
Alomomola:
While Alomomola does wonders into Belly drum sets, Alomomola does not appreciate what slurpuff provides with utility or its special sets. Slurpuff cures the toxics that mola likes to spread and keeps its team healthy with wishes as well. Mola doesn’t appreciate toxic but yawn also forces it to switch out preemptively. Most Alomomola teams also don’t love webs since slow wall breakers like Rampardos, Specs Goodra, and even things like Band Aggron and White Herb Torterra make great use of webs. Specially offensive slurpuff also 2HKOs mola with thunderbolt.
Worse Matchups
Goodra:
While Goodra isn’t an answer to slurpuff, it does survive all of slurpuff’s sets (except belly drum) and hits it with strong sludge bombs. Goodra doesn’t love switching in on a slurpuff but isn’t scared of staying in on it either.
Ferrothorn:
Ferrothorn isn’t scared of most of Slurpuff’s sets. The only set it’s scared of is its flamethrower and even that is only a 2hko. While gyro ball is always a 2hko and almost always kills after an unburden proc because you won’t be above 78% after sitrus berry. It's also immune to toxic and draining kiss sets take extra damage from iron barbs.
Tinkaton:
While Tinkaton doesn’t usually OHKO you with utility sets, max attack sets have a chance to OHKO even defensive slurpuffs and adamant makes it always OHKO. It’s not a mon you want to stay in on, you can’t really damage it and it can easily out damage you and setup hazards or status.
Partners
Slow Wallbreakers:
This was briefly touched on but mons like Rampardos really appreciate Webs and demolish the meta with sheer force life orb boosted attacks coming off a base 165 Attack stat. Even Pokemon like gallade and mamoswine appreciate the opportunity to stay in on mons that usually would be faster than them.
Defensive walls:
Goodra, Rotom-Heat, Ferrothorn, Dondozo, and any defensive mon that lacks recovery really appreciates a wish mon as well as a heal bell mon. Goodra especially compliments the special attackers that usually come on on slurpuff.
Choice Item Users:
Scarfers like Kingdra, Mamoswine, and Rotom-Mow/Heat love the holes that Slurpuff puts in defensive answers whether it's through toxic or by letting other offensive wallbreakers wear them out first. Specs users like Yanmega, Charizard, Houndoom, and Goodra enjoy being able to invest more in power than speed with webs support. Band users like Aggron, Gallade, Mamoswine, and even Flareon appreciate the webs as well.
Rapidash-Galar:
Rapidash at the moment is one of the best Gallade answers. Being that Slurpuff also “can” answer gallade, having rapidash on your team allows your Slurpuff to run more diverse sets instead of the typical gallade answer set. This allows for more interesting strategies and allows you to do better in matchups that rapidash struggles into like Alomomola and certain Pawmot sets.
