35 Pokes, every month 35 Pokemon are randomly generated to become legal in that respective metagame, with no other Pokemon being legal. We are a Smogon affiliated Natdex Alternative-Metagame created by the community, and are currently made up of around 1600 players. To play the tier, you must join the discord and verify your Smogon account. From there you can grab the Gladiator role and ping for some games. We also have a non official ladder in the discord, and are a votable Natdex-AM every 6 months.
35 Pokes was created when NotGerald wanted to host a Pokémon tournament with his real life friends, however none of his friends knew much about Pokémon, so he felt the fairest way to have them play was to randomly generate Pokémon for them to play with. With inspiration from Winsect Cup, another metagame with level 35 bug types, he created 35 Pokes. Unfortunately none of his friends liked the idea of playing Pokémon, so NotGerald decided to just make it into a discord. Most of the original players came from Winsect Cup, followed up by a post on R/Stunfisk on August, which caused their first big boom in players.
Competitive Pokemon is a complex and multi-dimensional game characterized by its evolution.
A meta threat may arise, which you may need to adapt to. And that threat may adapt back, and you
may adapt back to it, and so on. Innovation is how Pokemon thrives, and 35 pokes takes this core factor
of Pokemon and expands on it. By rolling a limited set of 35 random Pokemon, you create an environment where there
is no established meta, there are no established threats, and tiers hardly matter, all you are left with is your
knowledge of competitive Pokemon, and your skills. This makes 35 pokes a breeding ground for innovation, as the
meta constantly develops, new responses will be discovered to top meta threats, and previously powerful Pokemon will
fall off. Often these innovations will be something you won't see very all that much in other tiers, and they'll have their
own uniqueness to them, as you are forced to do in a limited format.
Several months exhibit this, March24, for example, is notorious for the many wacky innovations in the metagame
with Regice using frost breath to beat quiver dance Oricorio-Sensu & "Satan-Ice", which consists of
Aurora Veil + Snowscape on ice body Regice which lets it stall out most of the meta with toxic and rest.
In May24 shiinotic was one of the best defensive walls and could even run specs. Zebstrika is practically the
poster child of bad Pokemon that turned out amazing in 35 pokes. Sap sipper made it immune to Serperior's stab,
electric typing to glare, and its amazing speed let it be a very effective breaker. Zebstrika single-handedly made
Serperior an otherwise broken ban-worthy Pokemon, into simply just another top threat.
In short, 35 pokes inherently forces innovation and pushes it to it's limits, and while each meta only
lasts a month, it is still plenty of time for the meta to evolve and reach a stable point.
The 35 Pokes discord is by far one of the most nicest and welcoming communities you will find in a
Pokemon discord. It's easy to find team advice, have conversations, and just generally have a good time
with community members. The mods will also ensure a continuous safe environment for everybody.
If you've been in 35 pokes for any amount of time, you'll know there are several community-led projects.
The community's favorite one is the roster reveals, which are an event that takes place
at the start of every month in order to reveal the new roster of Pokemon. These are usually
games of some kind that the community can interact with. This results in a ton of community engagement
while revealing the roster. You can read more about the roster reveals here. Another largely known
community-run project is 35 Weekly. 35 Weekly is a project started by MamboTND (and is continued by Quacklord)
which involves recapping the previous weeks of the current metagame, and making notes of any
developments and notable games. It goes in-depth and breaks down individual Pokemon as well as
team styles. They are really well-written, and you can check them out here if you want to. 35 Chronicles is
similar to 35 weekly in that they document previous month's developments and such, but they are set apart by
formatting, and they document the history of a previous month rather than an ongoing or recently completed month.
They have their own art style as well, which is messy, but appealing to look at because of that. It's kind of evolved to
be a recognizable art style in the 35 pokes community in a way. If you would like to know more about chronicles,
you can find them at the bottom of a ton of the month's pages.
