Organic Forms and textures

Artist Statement

For this assignment we were supposed to craft an image using something that came up organic and was a natural look already put in place. For this, I chose to take a photo outside, hence the trees above, I thought it looked very good as well as the tree and the snow on and around it gave it the organic and natural vibe we needed to create for this assignment. The setting for this photo is at sunday river, on a chair lift looking over the Oz peak looking at the trees to the left of the trail. The image was made on the chairlift, and the only materials I used were the natural lighting gave to me as well as my phone to take the picture. I chose to create this image because it represents my personality, I love to ski as well as be outdoors and this photo was supposed to be "organic" and it gave me the perfect opportunity to create this photo. For this photo I really tried to focus on incorporating the texture presented by the ridgid trees and the soft snow combined, and I also tried to use up all the space on the photo as I could but get the blocked out sun in as well to make my photo more emphasized and the lighting more soft.

The composition principles I used were angle up, and sharp focus. I used the angle up so I could fit the sun in and make the perfect lighting, and I used the sharp focus so I could capture as much detail as possible in the entire photo. My project evolved from me thinking that this project was due the day back from break but realized that it wasn't so I took this photo while skiing on sunday, the day before break ended, and I thought the soft fluffy snow would collaborate with the sharp trees. I thought about using the snow and showing a specific textural element with it. Although I did think about using snow at first I also thought about using a macro lens to take a photo of a specific wood grain, or wood pattern to show the organic and natural patterns shown in wood.

The meaning behind this image is that the snow and the trees are 2 very different elements, yet they both occur organically and that they pair well and show a beautiful pattern together. The story is that when I was skiing this was the only area of the mountain that was newly covered with snow, and whenever trees are covered with snow, I stop and take at least one photo because I think it is one of the most pleasing photos to look at that someone could take. This relates to my life because I enjoy skiing very much and it has become a bog part of my life in the last couple of years and to show the naturalness that comes from snow would be perfect for this project. The only thing that I would change about this image is if I would've changed the contrast a little bit as well as turned down the brightness but overall I am happy with this image.
