In recent statistics done by NEA, only about half of the waste Singapore generates is recycled. Furthermore, only about 12% of domestic waste produced is recycled as well. The other non-recycled trash is sent to Singapore's only landfill, Pulau Semakau. Our group aims to increase recyclying rates by automating the sorting process between recylcables and non-recyclables. Our product is essentially a bin that sorts thrown trash into 4 different categories - general waste, paper, plastic and metal. Powered by a Raspberry Pi, it uses computer vision to determinte the type of trash that is thrown into a bin before being sorted into its respective category. This reduces reliance on manual sorting. Thus, by automating recycling, the Trash Sort-inator brings Singapore closer to a circular economy, ensuring more materials get a second life instead of ending up in Pulau Semakau.
