What is it?
People have many different emotions, and there are many ways to manage them, such as spending time with friends, making time to relax and enjoy yourself, or even getting enough sleep. Even though there are plenty of tips on the internet written by credible people like psychologists, many people in Singapore still feel down in certain periods of their lives. It may be difficult for people to know how to deal with these feelings especially when they become too overwhelming. Sometimes they just need something to destress or just validate how they feel.
Researching on using AI to tackle mental health issues, we found out that there are already AI powered apps. Many of them are very advanced, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and are collaborations between therapists and AI researchers. Even though our scope is not so large as to tackle mental disorders, it is good to know that there are already existing solutions that could be adapted to our problem statement. Closer to home, on the medline.sg website, an AI chatbot “Wysa” has been integrated into the website, initially to combat those feeling stressed amid the Covid-19 pandemic, to help them build mental resilience and learn self-care. The Wysa platform will also give users access to meditation, breathing, yoga, motivational conversations and exercises.
Based on some research conducted, music can involve cognitive processes that influence attention, memory, categorization, motor action planning, prediction, communication and emotion (Levitin 2009). Some researchers have widely agreed on music as an effective regulative tool for emotions. Its effects can be anything from arousing and intensifying specific feelings, evaluating and accepting negative emotions and mood management as well as coping and facilitating thoughts and feelings (Thoma et al. 2012; Miranda 2012; Rentfrow 2012; Boer and Fischer 2010; Goethem and Sloboda 2011; Miranda and Gaudreau 2010; Sarikallio 2007, 2008, 2011; Chamorro-Premuzic et al. 2007, 2009; Greenwood and Long 2009; Sarikallo and Erkkilae 2007 and Mennin et al. 2005) From these we can conclude that music seems to have an effect on people’s different emotions which we can take hold of and make use in our program to help these struggles.
We can see again that food has a significant place in our needs which heavily influences both our psychological and emotional states. Food goes beyond just sustaining fuel but for so many things as well. Different reports have shown how food affects these emotions, such as affecting mood by way of neurotransmitters due to the physiological properties of food (Markus et al., 1998). Food also has been known to decrease feelings of helplessness, depression, loss of control and distress (Markus et al., 1998). Not only that but it even is known to increase feelings of joy (Macht and Dettmer, 2006).
