Currently, there are approximately 39,459 to 16,911 individuals in Singapore that are legally blind (Ang, 2021), which are people who have a visual acuity of less than 20/200. These people need to rely on other individuals to describe their surroundings, such as stating what exactly is in front of them, reading signage, colour, and expressions or body language of people or other living things.
Relying on others for basic information such as signage, maps, and street signs can limit their ability to navigate independently, explore new environments, or do mundane things such as recognising landmarks. This could cause them to feel less self-sufficient, and evoke the feeling of helplessness, inadequacy, and being a burden. To reduce such feelings of helplessness and allow the visually impaired to be independent, innovation of several solutions has been pioneered. (Costabel, 2023)
