Marcus returns in the company of Two Texas Rangers, Azazel, Adaan, and Gabriel. Ne'va and his tribesmen shout for silence. And, as this is happening, Marcus relates to Toph and Clarise The events that have happened to him and his companions. When the tent is quiet, Ne'va announces that the machine is no longer the concern of the Midnights and the Red Sect. And, that the folk who were at the machine's location are now unconscious in wooden boxes, buried in mud. To retrieve them before the perish, Ne'Va wants the Englishman. If they will not do this, He and his tribe will take over the city themselves. This starts a huge fight. The whole room agrees to help the Midnights, but the Masked Man scurries off once the fighting starts. The tribesmen throw a globe of darkness up to hide their location, and monstrous creatures appear from the darkness. These creatures, summoned from portals, seem to leave a stain on the ground when they die. Also, zombies rise up to attack the groups. All of the groups throw their tables on their sides for cover. and, a Chimera appears to attack the tent. Violence can be heard from outside the tent as well. Specter is floored by something, and some of the folk help him by dragging him outside. His adventure is continued in My Meeting with the Doc.
As the smaller creatures are weeded out, five more chimeras appear. The room is weeded out as the beasts kill many folk. A were-gorilla makes a dash at Van Pelt, with the help of a nearby chimera. They knock him unconscious, dump multiple vials of what looks to be blood down his throat, and then smash his head open. Van Pelt has fallen...
Once this happens, The remaining chimeras morph back to a human form, and surrender. They are promptly killed. All the bodies of the tribesmen are gathered together, and burned.
The remaining folk in the room are few. The Black Hand leadership is gone. So are most of the police in the city. Hellstromme's executive is the only survivor of his group. Bigelow and two of his folk survive. The police chief makes it, but not the arch bishop. The Midnight/Red Sect looses Van Pelt, and the Texas Rangers with Marcus.
The Police Chief makes it known that the city is in dire need of leadership, and manpower to rebuild quickly before the imminent invasion by the Mafia happens. Hellstromme's executive offers automatons to help, and the Midnight group strenuously objects. They propose that the Midnight family could have sufficient manpower in two days to start rebuilding the city. The police chief likes the idea, and gives the Midnights three day to start working, or Hellstromme gets to let the Automatons loose!
Close to the end of this meeting, Marcus notices That Van Pelt is slightly snoring. Guess he survived after all. He soon wakes up in a rush of adrenaline. Shouting, British obscenities at dead tribesmen. He seems hairier, if that is possible. He smells like a wet animal, and no longer has a limp. Hmmm....
Gabriel goes with a letter to the Midnights in Baton Rouge, and promises to explain the state of affairs in town, to get them here as quickly as possible. The group minus Marcus heads to the house, and discovers 5 boxes on the front lawn. Three are townsfolk from Butte, two are Collin and Velma Midnight, all wee at their private still, all bear puncture wounds to the neck. Probably drugged by a tribesman dart. All are well. But, no sign of the machine.
Marcus takes the bodies of the dead rangers back to the Ranger Headquarters for New Orleans. The old man is sitting
They head back to Butte, make sure everything is ok, drop off Mama Gumbo, and the remains of Douglas, and get her assurance that she will help Collin and Velma keep things flowing.
They head to the house, and meet Gabriel with the reply from the folks: We are coming. And, in numbers. We will be there tomorrow.
Specter returns looking like he had a fight of his own, but says little to anyone about it.
