--Men Who Loved Men
Storyteller
♫ Once upon a time, in a world long ago,
Lived men who loved men who prayed it didn’t show.
Their lives hid in secret, so the world would not see,
Were men who loved men and who lived in misery.
Men who loved men is the vilest of sin.
Is there no hope?
For the men who loved men?
Then arrived a time, when darkness turned light,
And the men who loved men no longer showed fright.
Though not in the open, being cautious were they,
But the men who loved men were having their day.
Men who loved men feel alive once again.
Now there is hope,
They have found a new friend.
A new friend,
For the men who loved men. ♫
Shocked and perplexed by Beatriz’s confession of the heart, Father Louis Paschal ventures into the city to find his own love, Alonso Montilleo. He finds him at the home of Juan and Pierre.
Pierre
Father Paschal, it is a surprise to see you grace our home with a visit.
Juan
What would induce you to come to us?
Alonso
It is all right, Juan. He has come for me.
Pierre
He comes for you?
Alonso
Yes, Pierre, he comes for me.
Juan
Ah, the world has just become more interesting. Father, why do you seek our friend Alonso?
Pierre
Yes, why? Is there some favor you seek?
Louis
Jest as thee may, there is serious business between Alonso and me.
Alonso
The Father is a friend.
Juan
A friend?!?
Louis
Yes, a friend.
Pierre
And Father, pray tell, how friendly are you with men like us?
Louis
I am a friend to all men.
Juan
Even to men like us?
Louis
Especially men like us.
Pierre
Alonso, you have indeed, brought a friend.
Louis
It is more than friendship I seek. What I seek is love.
Alonso
A love I am willing to give.
Juan
But, Father, do you not have fear? You seek a forbidden fruit.
Pierre
Juan speaks truth! Peril is everywhere for men like us. It will be hundredfold for a man of the cloth!!
Louis
But what is life without true love? Death not to be feared with a life of love. And without love, death is liberation for a tormented soul. Better to die young than to grow lonely and old.
Alonso
Love is what you have found and it has found me.
Juan
But what of your aspirations?
Pierre
You are most popular among the bishops. Surely one day you will be the center of their attention.
Juan
Word has come from Rome that Sixtus is ill. Before very long his place will be filled.
Alonso
Then the papal will have a man like us.
Louis
And changes could be made for men like us.
Pierre
Oh, Father, do not tease us with the hope that would bring. It would be a day to shout out loud and a day to sing.
Juan
It would be a glorious day of gay!!
Alonso
So, Holy Father, what name would you choose? A signal to men like us, what name would you use?
Louis
It would have to be a name to reflect that great day!
Juan
Pope Gay?
Louis
A name that is hidden but well known to men like us!
Pierre
Pope Gaius!
Louis
Pope Gaius?
Pope Gaius!!!
Alonso
Can one man make that much difference? Will it be left to only one man?
Juan
If anyone can, Pope Gaius can!
--A Day To Be Gay
Louis
♫ When I become pope it will be a breeze,
I’ll make the changes with the greatest of ease.
I’m on your side, I’ll hear your pleas,
No more shunning as if we were diseased! ♫
Juan & Pierre
♫ Oh, what a day! A day to be gay!! ♫
Alonso
♫ But wait!!
Move over honey, cause here comes Jesus,
And he’s not happy with the things that please us. ♫
Louis
♫ But the Lord will speak and give us all hope,
Cause he’s the One who will anoint me pope! ♫
Juan & Pierre
♫ Oh, what a day! A day to be gay!! ♫
Louis
♫ Don’t worry my friend, be courageous to the end,
The Lord is forgiving, there will be no more sin.
What more can I say? It will be a wonderful day,
When all the Lord’s children will see it our way! ♫
Juan & Pierre
♫ Oh, what a day! A day to be gay!! ♫
Alonso
♫ And if you were pope, what would be your name?
What would we call you to celebrate your fame? ♫
Louis
♫ Here is the clue you are to seek,
When you hear Gaius is pope,
You’ll no longer need to be weak.
Then you can boldly walk about,
When you hear Gaius is pope,
No more hiding, you can come out! ♫
Louis, Alonso, Juan & Pierre
♫ Oh, what a day!
Oh, what a day!
A day to be gay!! ♫
Alonso
But Holy Father, you must give us more. Another clue that will signal our holy war.
Juan
Yes, Gaius must have a number for all to see. A number as a clue. A number to please.
Pierre
How about the “First?”
Alonso
That’s the worst!
Louis
A number I will give as a sign. The number you will hear will be “sixty-nine!”
Alonso, Juan & Pierre
Sixty-nine?!?
--Sixty-Nine Is Divine
Louis
♫ Sixty-nine is mighty fine,
It will blow more than your mind.
Sixty-nine, sixty-nine,
This is the number that is Divine. ♫
Louis, Alonso, Juan & Pierre
♫ Sixty-nine is Divine,
No more hiding, our lights can shine!
Sixty-nine will be the sign,
The number is yours, the number is mine. ♫
Louis
♫ Sixty-nine as sweet as wine,
The best grapes, that you can find.
Sixty-nine, sixty-nine,
The greatest number ever designed! ♫
Louis, Alonso, Juan & Pierre
♫ Sixty-nine is Divine,
No more hiding, our lights can shine!
Sixty-nine will be the sign,
The number is yours, the number is mine. ♫
Louis
♫ Sixty-nine is not for swine,
The “Holies” who tote the line.
Sixty-nine, sixty-nine,
It’s only for us who are refined! ♫
Louis, Alonso, Juan & Pierre
♫ Sixty-nine is Divine,
No more hiding, our lights can shine!
Sixty-nine will be the sign,
The number is yours, the number is mine. ♫
Alonso, Juan & Pierre
♫ Sixty-nine! Sixty-nine! ♫
Louis
♫ The number is yours, the number is mine. ♫
Alonso, Juan & Pierre
♫ Sixty-nine is Divine! ♫
Louis
♫ The number is yours, the number is mine. ♫
Louis, Alonso, Juan & Pierre
♫ The number is yours!
The number is mine!! ♫
A Messenger (interrupting)
Excuse me, Father, I beg your indulgence.
Louis
What is it my good fellow?
A Messenger
Torquemada has come to the village and is asking for you.
Louis
Thank you. I will arrive there shortly.
Alonso
Is this the same Torquemada we have heard of?
Louis
Yes, I’m afraid so, my friend. Tomas de Torquemada, the Inquisitor General from Castile.
