4HM1: Three cities: Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea
4HM2: Mosta, Ta'Qali Crafts Village, Mdina
4HM3: Valletta
4HM4: Palazzo Parisio, Clapham Junction, Dingli Cliffs, Buskett Gardens
4HM5: Prehistoric Temples
4HM6: Blue Grotto & Marsaxlokk market
Three cities:
Cospicua: a double fortified harbour city and the largest of the three. It was also given a title as Citta’ Cottonera, but erroneously the title is now used to define the whole region. You will then arrive in Vittoriosa. Vittoriosa is ideally situated for safe anchorage and over time it has developed a very long history with maritime, mercantile and military activities.
Vittoriosa: here we will see the fortifications which date back to the times of the Knights and were later used by the British for their defensive purpose. We will visit the maze like, underground Air Raid shelters and relive the conditions of what has been referred to as the Second Great Siege of Malta. These subterranean bomb shelters were excavated in the solid rock and were extended as the war progressed.
Senglea: also called Civitas Invicta because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of 1565. The name Senglea was given by the grandmaster who built it, Claude De La Sengle. The island on which Senglea lies was joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape. During this tour you will walk through the various narrow streets shaded by many historic churches and buildings.
Mosta: a central town famous for its Rotunda church. The Rotunda also famous as the Mosta Dome is the third largest unsupported dome in the whole World with an internal diameter of 37.2 metres and walls nearly 9.1 metres thick. This church was built in the 18th Century and became known throughout the country in 1942 when during World War II, a dropped bomb failed to explode, thus sparing the lives of some 300 people.
Ta'Qali Crafts Village: located nearby was once a British WWII outpost, but has been converted to a village for local handicrafts. You will be able to watch local artisans at work blowing elaborate glass art pieces, intricately assembling original silver filigree jewellery and many more. This is the perfect place to pick up treasures that will remind you of your Malta visit.
Mdina: Malta’s old capital city. Mdina built on a plateau in the centre of the island, the city's old Baroque buildings, cathedral and magnificent bastion walls dominate the rural skyline. Mdina, once the capital city of Malta has had many names including Melita (Roman Occupation), Medina (Arabic Occupation), Citta' Nobile (Knights of St. John) and Citta Vecchia (after Valletta was built). Today is also referred as the Silent City since it inspires tranquility at any time of the day or night. Mdina is one of Europe's finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture.
Valletta: Malta's Capital City and a World Heritage Site. Valletta contains buildings from the 16th century onwards, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as Knights Hospitaller. You will walk through the bustling streets and to Barracca Gardens for a breathtaking panorama of the Grand Harbour.
You will then visit St. John's Co-Cathedral (entrance tickets cost €10 per person) where you will see the painting 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' by Caravaggio, considered one of Caravaggio's masterpieces and the only painting signed by the painter.
During the tour you will also watch the Malta 5D Show (entrance tickets cost €7 per person)where you will discover the history of our islands in a different and enjoyable way.
Barrakka Garden: You will be able to enjoy a spectacular view of the Grand Harbour (the largest natural harbour of the Mediterranean Sea), which was a British military base and the main reason why Malta came under fire as soon as Mussolini declared war on the Allied forces.
Palazzo Parisio: located in the heart of picturesque Naxxar, this 18th Century Palace is a place of wonder that begs to be explored. On your visit you will discover the intricate nuances of Malta’s historic nobility and their enchanting way of life. Touring this stately home offers great insight and sparks the imagination – whether you find yourself seeking inspiration from the grand Ballroom, the detailed Family Chapel or the fabulous walled Gardens and Orangery
Clapham Junction: is covered with very puzzling and mysterious groove in the rock. They appear to be ancient roadways of some sort. They do not appear to be directly linked to the building of any of Malta's megalithic and they do cross the small island and seem to be found on the higher and rockier surfaces. There can be many of them in the same area, beside each other. Sometimes they are a solitary pair that can go on for miles. One of the mysteries and frustrations of Malta's ancient and magnificent history is that there are no records left of it by those people. No written word or pictorial guide was left by the Temple Builders and Cart Rut users.
The Buskett Gardens: located in the fertile valley of Wied il-Luq, Siggiewi. The gardens are at their best in Spring but they offer shade from the harsh mid- Summer sun and offer a quiet place for a walk in the Winter months. Verdala Palace, an official residence of the President of Malta, is located on the edge of the Gardens. A coffee break is also included in this tour where you will taste the delicious and traditional “Pastizzi”.
Dingli Cliffs: located less than a kilometre to the south west of the village of Dingli. The cliffs are 220 metres high and are the highest point in Malta! An isolated chapel makes for a charming landmark. Built in the 17th century, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene offers some of the most beautiful views you can get from these cliffs. From here you can also see the tiny uninhabited islet of Filfla.
Marsaxlokk: (pronounced marsa-schlock – meaning Southern Port) is a small and picturesque fishing village of is located in the South Eastern part of Malta. It is popular for a daily open-air market, offering a selection of the finest fish restaurants on the island, for the peaceful walks around the coast and harbour, as well as for its secluded and untainted swimming zones.
Grand Master’s Palace: (entrance tickets cost €8 per person) has been the administrative centre of Malta for almost three and a half centuries. The original palace, built in 1571, was the seat of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalliers of St John and later, during the British colonial period, served as the Governor’s palace. Today it is home to the House of Representatives of Malta and the office of the President of the Republic of Malta.
Blue Grotto: is a number of sea caves on the southern coast of Malta very close to Zurrieq and then Qrendi Village. It is famous for the extraordinary sea reflections within the cave area where many tourists during the year come here on purpose.
Malta Temples Tour: is a must for anyone who travels to this beautiful Mediterranean island. Malta and Gozo are home to seven megalithic temples, all of which are designated as world heritage sites by UNESCO. These megalithic temples date back 5500 years ago and are the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, even older than the Stonehenge and the Pyramids. It is also home to more than thirty other temples, all of which reflect Malta’s rich past. This tour includes the visit of Ghar Dalam, Hagar Qim & Mnajdra Temples, and Hamrija Tower.
