Jewish Malta: The first place you’ll visit is inside the stunning silent city and ex-capital of Malta, Mdina. The Old Jewish Silk Market is a must see destination and is not really surprising to find given that during the medieval era almost one third of the local inhabitants in this walled city were Jews. Next we’ll take you to the famous Kalkara cemetery, which while small is the oldest (XVIII century) surviving Jewish burial ground in Malta. Safely under lock and key and accessible only with special permission, you’ll be able to see the remaining identifiable 12 graves and reflect on their lives and journeys. Finally we will take you to see the related wonders on display at the Malta Maritime Museum.
Mdina, Malta’s old capital city. Mdina built on a plateau in the centre of the island, the city's old Baroque buildings, cathedral and magnificent bastion walls dominate the rural skyline. Mdina, once the capital city of Malta has had many names including Melita (Roman Occupation), Medina (Arabic Occupation), Citta' Nobile (Knights of St. John) and Citta Vecchia (after Valletta was built). Today is also referred as the Silent City since it inspires tranquility at any time of the day or night. Mdina is one of Europe's finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture.
Rabat: Rabat is the historical suburban town of Mdina. It is dotted with catacombs and many historical churches and convents that are worth visiting. Rabat played a major role in Malta's past and is a prime source of its cultural heritage. It is also well established on the tourist map due to its archaeological and historical sites: The Roman Villa (Domus Romana), catacombs, St. Paul's Grotto and the fine churches and monasteries.
Mosta, a central town famous for its Rotunda church. The Rotunda also famous as the Mosta Dome is the third largest unsupported dome in the whole World with an internal diameter of 37.2 metres and walls nearly 9.1 metres thick. This church was built in the 18th Century and became known throughout the country in 1942 when during World War II, a dropped bomb failed to explode, thus sparing the lives of some 300 people.
Ta'Qali Crafts Village, located nearby was once a British WWII outpost, but has been converted to a village for local handicrafts. You will be able to watch local artisans at work blowing elaborate glass art pieces, intricately assembling original silver filigree jewellery and many more. This is the perfect place to pick up treasures that will remind you of your Malta visit.
Valletta, Malta's Capital City and a World Heritage Site. Valletta contains buildings from the 16th century onwards, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as Knights Hospitaller. You will walk through the bustling streets and to Barracca Gardens for a breathtaking panorama of the Grand Harbour. You will then visit St. John's Co-Cathedral where you will see the painting 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' by Caravaggio, considered one of Caravaggio's masterpieces and the only painting signed by the painter. During the tour you will also watch the Malta 5D Show where you will discover the history of our islands in a different and enjoyable way.
The Three Cities enclosed within the Cottonera fortification lines are also known as Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (Isla) and Cospicua (Bormla) respectively. This is the oldest urban part of Malta’s harbour area. There are various vantage points from where views can be enjoyed of the Grand Harbour surrounded by some 7 kilometres of fortification.
Marsaxlokk (pronounced marsa-schlock – meaning Southern Port) is a small and picturesque fishing village of is located in the South Eastern part of Malta. It is popular for a daily open-air market, offering a selection of the finest fish restaurants on the island, for the peaceful walks around the coast and harbour, as well as for its secluded and untainted swimming zones.
Grand Master’s Palace (€8 pp entrance required) has been the administrative centre of Malta for almost three and a half centuries. The original palace, built in 1571, was the seat of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalliers of St John and later, during the British colonial period, served as the Governor’s palace. Today it is home to the House of Representatives of Malta and the office of the President of the Republic of Malta.
Blue Grotto is a number of sea caves on the southern coast of Malta very close to Zurrieq and then Qrendi Village. It is famous for the extraordinary sea reflections within the cave area where many tourists during the year come here on purpose.
