Your questions answered

Do I have to be a member to come on a foray?

Most of our forays are for members only. Find out what's on when on our forays page.

Member's forays are run every month, with occasional pop-up, short-notice forays, too.

Can I bring my family on a foray?

Yes. It’s great to be able to share your interest, so please do bring them along; this is covered under your subscription. However, when we organise chargeable events e.g. workshops, only individuals who have a paid subscription will be able to take advantage of reduced prices. Friends and family will pay the full rate.

Can I bring children on a foray?

Our forays can often travel slower than a tortoise on a gentle stroll, so unless your children have a keen interest in fungi in the first place, our forays are not very child friendly.

Do you forage for edible fungi on forays?

The aims of our forays are to find, learn about and identify fungi, rather than foraging for edible species. We do come across edible species on our travels, though.

How do I tell apart edible and poisonous fungi?

There is no clear-cut rule or set of simple rules that indicate which fungi are good to eat and which are poisonous. If you are considering eating any fungus, we advise you not to do so unless you are 100% confident as to its identification.

Can I send you photos of  a fungus to identify?

You can...but it is often difficult or impossible to identify a fungus from a photo alone. We'll try! Email us at team.elfe@gmail.com

What about my dog?

Although some of our foray sites do permit dogs (on a lead), we tend to travel at a slow pace which even the most easy-going dog may find tedious - and no one wants their dog eating the fungi!
