Arsenic in the Shade?

Post date: Jan 23, 2013 9:54:20 AM

Small grey-brown fungi that frequent damp mossy grassland are perhaps not the most glamorous of the macro-fungi, but calling them arsenic in the shade is perhaps a little tough. A literal interpretation of Arrhenia umbratilis might possibly be based on arrenicum (synonymous with arsenic) and umbratilis pertaining to shade. However unbecoming the name, a damp boggy field in South Uist produced a new record for Britain.
