Piggyback Pinkgill: a new species to look out for in Scotland

Post date: Nov 24, 2013 10:29:22 PM

Some fungi grow on deadwood, some on leaf litter, others in association with live plants. This month's Fungus of the Month, the Piggyback Pinkgill (Volvariella surrecta), grows on another fungus! The host in question is the Clouded Funnel (Clitocybe nebularis).

The Piggyback Pinkgill has recently been discovered in Scotland, and with such a distinct habitat, it should be relatively easy to spot if it turns up elsewhere. Have a look at the full profile here.

As usual, please keep an eye out for this fungus and then either let us know you've found it or submit the record to your local fungus group. Also, remember that the ever growing list of 'Fungus of the Month' profiles is available here, ordered alphabetically or by its highlight month. We are always keen to hear about new records for any of these species at any time.
