Ruth M. Davis has been President and Chief Executive Officer of The Pymatuning Group Inc., since 1981. Dr. Davis served as Assistant Secretary of Energy for Resource Applications from 1979 to 1981 and as Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Advanced Technology from 1977 to 1979. Dr. Davis served as Chairperson of The Aerospace Corporation, a non-profit entity engaged in space technology, from December 1992 to December 2000. Dr. Davis serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Betac Corporation. Dr. Davis serves as a Director of Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. and International Executive Service Corps. Dr. Davis served as a Trustee of Consolidated Edison Company of New York and a Director of Air Products and Chemicals Inc., Ceridian Corporation, Principal Financial Group, Premark International Inc., Sprint Corporation, Tupperware Corp. and Varian Associates Inc. Dr. Davis served as a Director of BTG, Inc., since 1986 and Giddings & Lewis Inc. since 1993.

Ruth Davis Lohr, the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Maryland, passed away on March 28, 2012 at the age of 83. She served as Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Advanced Technology and as Assistant Secretary of Energy. Eventually she set up her own consulting company, The Pymatuning Group, Inc., of which she was CEO. An obituary may be found here. Ruth Davis was a generous benefactor of the university, and she endowed the Ruth Davis Professorship, currently held by Jonathan Rosenberg. The Ruth Davis Graduate Fellowship, which is given alternately in Mathematics and Physics, was established in her honor by The Aerospace Corporation, on whose Board she served. A feature story on Ruth Davis appeared in Terp magazine in 2004.

RUTH DAVIS LOHR

Passed away at her home in Silver Spring, MD on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. She was 83 years old. She survived her husband, Benjamin Lohr, her mother, Mary Anna Ackermann and her father, William George Davis. Ruth Davis was President and CEO of The Pymatuning Group, Inc., a small technology management company established in 1981. She obtained her B.A. in mathematics from American University and her M.A. and Ph.D in mathematics from the University of Maryland. She served as Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Advanced Technology and as Assistant Secretary of Energy. In addition, she set up the Center for Biomedical Communications at NIH as well as the Center for Computer Sciences and Technology at NIST. Dr. Davis served as Chairman of The Aerospace Corporation for seven years as well as serving on some seven other corporate boards. The National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Public Administration, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences had all elected her to membership. She served on the University of Maryland’s Board of Visitors and on the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science Board of Overseers. She established theRuth Davis Professorship in Mathematics at the University of Maryland.
