Manor House
The residence of the lord and his family, which also served as the administrative center for the estate. It often included a Great Hall for communal meals and manorial courts, private chambers (solar), a kitchen, and sometimes a chapel and defensive elements like a moat, gatehouse, and fortified walls.
Demesne Land
The fields, pastures, and woodlands directly controlled by the lord and worked by the peasants (serfs) for the direct benefit of his household.
Dependent Land
Land assigned to peasant families (villeins/serfs) to farm for their own sustenance, in return for which they owed labor services and goods to the lord.
Free Land
Land held by free peasants (yeomen) who paid money rent rather than labor services.
Village
A cluster of peasant cottages and communal spaces, typically located near the manor house and surrounding farmlands.
Village Church
The center for religious services and often a site for public meetings and social gatherings.
Mill
A water-powered or windmill used for grinding grain into flour, a vital service for the manor community.
Workshops
Areas where essential goods like tools, clothing, and furniture were made by skilled workers.
Common Pasture
Shared areas used by villagers for grazing their livestock.
Woodland
Forested areas that provided essential resources like wood for fuel and building materials, as well as areas for hunting (often a privileged activity for the lord).
