An hour is made up of 60 minutes. Each minute is 1/60 of an hour.
a quarter of an hour = 15 minutes, or 15/60 = 1/4 = 0.25 of an hour
a half of an hour = 30 minutes or 30/60 = 1/2 = 0.5 of an hour
three quarters of an hour is 45 minutes or 45/60 = 3/4 = 0.75 of an hour
So, we could find the decimal amount by doing the number of minutes divided by 60
Example:
17 minutes = 17/60 = or 0.28 of an hour
To use time, we will probably need it as a decimal:)
For Example, if you make $30/hour and work for 4 1/2 hours, how much will you make?
30/hour x 4 1/2 hours
30 x 4.5 = $135
or
If you clock in at 3:30 and clock out at 5:45, how long did you work?
3:30-4 = 30 minutes
4-5 = 60 minutes
5-5:45 = 45 minutes
add them up = 135 minutes. Divide by 60 to find the hours...
135/60 = 2.25 hours
what is .25 hours? that's a quarter of an hour...0.25 x 60 = 15 minutes
The big reminder is that the decimal is NOT the number of minutes...it's the fraction of the hour
that "fraction of an hour" is the decimal x 60...
