OK, so we will explore some word problems that require Fractions, Percents and Decimals...
To do word problems, we need to convert fractions and percents to decimals.
15% = 0.15
The word problem says the price is LESS after the discount, so we need to SUBTRACT the 15% from the regular price...
15% off of $114.79 ---------> 0.15 x 114.79 =17.2185 ~$17.22 off
regular price - discount = new lower price
$114.79 - $17.22 = $97.57 New discounted price!
20% off as a decimal is take away 20% of $34.00.
20% = 0.20 x $34 = 6.80
reg. price- discount
$34.00 - $6.80 =$17.20
Add 7% tax, so 0.07 x new price
0.07 x $17.20 = $1.20
so discount price + tax
$17.20 + $1.20Â
$18.40!
