Once you've mastered finding good information, reading for understanding, and summarizing, you'll end up with pages of notes summarized in your own words. The next step is putting them all together. We call this synthesizing information!
Found info...check!
Read info...check!
Summarized info...check!
Now it's time to rewrite things by putting similarly topiced info together in paragraphs.
What is a paragraph?
"A standard paragraph consists of a topic sentence (introducing the main idea), supporting sentences (providing evidence, examples, and details to develop the idea), and a concluding sentence (summarizing the paragraph's main point and providing closure). These elements work together to present a single, focused idea clearly and logically, ensuring the reader understands the writer's point and how it fits into the overall argument."
A synthesis would be you putting pieces of information from different sources into ONE paragraph. That means the info is linked by your topic sentence!
For example:Â
topic: bear habitats
You find 3 great books (or websites, articles, podcasts, etc) One book describes polar bears, and another talks about black bears, while a third source talks about grizzly bears. 3 Sources!
Summarize: you read and summarize the info about bear habitats from each source in your own words. (your notes)
Synthesize: you come up with a topic sentence about bear habitats, then use all 3 sources to write ONE paragraph about bear habitats! Incorporate the different bears and their habitats!
