This unit explores exponents and roots. Just like addition and subtraction work as opposites, so do Powers and roots.
As we up our game and figure this out, we can add variables and ugliness:)
Multiplication and Division Re-visit!
Number x Number (review)
positive x positive = positive
a. 3 x 4 = 12
b. +5(3) = 15
positive x negative
a. (+2)(-8) = -16
b. (-3) x (+3) = -9
negative x negative
a. -6(-1) = 6
b. (-3)(-5) = 15
Number x Letter (always write number first)
3 x r = 3r
q x -6 = -6q
Letter x Letter
a x b = ab
a x a = a*2
Now we can have some ADVANCED MATH FUN!!
Practice Questions...
Gotta think to yourself...what is the exponent touching, or "EXPONENTING"?
What is the exponent touching, or "exponeneting"? it's JUST THE 5, so - 5 x 5 = -25
vs
(-5)*2 what is the 5 touching, or exponenting? THE BRACKETS, so both the - and the 5, so (-5)(-5) = 25
