HW:
1. I've given you a powerball ticket. As of this minute, the jackpot is estimated at $168,000,000. The drawing is Saturday.
Find the EV for your ticket. Payouts at different levels can be found here: http://www.powerball.com/powerball/pb_prizes.asp
At what level does the jackpot cause the EV to be $0? (or $2 -- even money -- depending on how you calculate it_
2. Here's a graph that many people have been disparaging online in the data analysis market: http://cdn.static-economist.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/original-size/images/print-edition/20160326_EUC906.png
the data came from here, table 5, page 12: http://www.livewhat.unige.ch/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Integrated-Report.pdf
What would you do to fix this graphic? What's clear, unclear, or needs to be fixed? What can be done? Do so.
3. We need to have some type of midterm evaluation in this class; something that lets all of us know that we've learned and grown. Towards that end, here's what I propose:
A survey is created next week. This survey will focus on the course as a whole, what is working and what is not.
We build this from questions that y'all input, and we mull over what will give us the best results.
I add a few questions of things I am particularly interested in.
Answers to these questions are collected anonymously, and then we analyze, creating a graphic and statistics to back up those questions.
A list of topics is we have covered is created next week. I pull some of my favorite questions in each of those sections, and we do them when we get back from break.
You may work with others, but outside of the course.
Answers will be turned in individually.
Individual meetings are held the Thursday after next. 10 - 15 minutes throughout Thursday. In the meeting we will discuss:
Your overall understanding of topics we've covered
Where your interests lie.
Setting up your reading list and focus for the second half of the course
Building what your final evidence of understanding will look like (what presentation/project/paper you will complete)
If you disagree or have other ideas, I need to know them ASAP. Because otherwise we will start work on this next Monday (right before break).
