1. "Charles Darwin argued that all people express certain basic feelings in the same way." This is the stated hypothesis for the experiment you participated in yesterday.
a) Outline the experimental procedures that were used yesterday. (one paragraph or many steps)
b) Outline possible problems with the procedure. (at least one paragraph)
c) Outline how you would create a procedure that would try to test Darwin's hypothesis. It should, however, use the eight pictures used in the sheet in some form. (at least two paragraphs, or a very long detailed list)
2. The usual way to study the brains response to sound is to compare the response to a noise to that of a pure tone (for example, how quickly the brain recognizes speech vs. a pure tone).
Researchers are interested in whether or not monkey respond to monkey sounds quicker than pure tone, so they aenesthitize the monkeys, run a wire directly to their brain, and then play pure tones and monkey calls. They then check the electrical response of each by measuring the number of firing neurons. The more firing neurons, the more the monkey responds to the sound.
Find the data at the bottom of page 158 in your book.
Run through the appropriate process to see if the monkeys are more responsive to monkey calls as opposed to tones.
3. On page 1.156, you will find the fuel efficiency of a bunch of different hatchbacks and SUVs. The hypothesis you want to test is whether SUVs and hatchbacks have different MPGs.
4. From the book do questions:
* 7.65
* 7.122 (have to do it by hand--sorry [no i'm not])
* 7.129.
* 7.141.
5. Refer back to question 1.41. Hypothesis is that women study different amount than men. Discuss and write a report.
6. Refer back to question 1.42. What do you think the average density of the earth is?
7. page 13 shows the IQ of 60 random fifth grader's IQs. Make something up to do with this data. Be clear about everything from the start to your conclusion.
