Statistics is a course dealing with data and how to properly understand it. The first part of our course will focus on statistical tools and manipulating data. The second piece will work with creating data, and the final piece will look at some advanced mathematical tools.
This course will also teach you some of the basics of a statistical computer program called R. This program is open source and designed to help us with the dirty work that comes along with statistics. Learning R will be done in groups, but is a requirement of the course.
In order to use R, we will be using computers at least once a week in the classroom. In addition, sometimes as we gather data in the class, we will be using equipment that can be delicate. Any damage done to any of the equipment will be assessed to those who cause it. In other words: YOU BREAK IT YOU BUY IT. Anyone who does not take part of class responsibly will be asked to leave and will have their parents contacted.
Occasionally students will be asked to bring in something for class (a bag of M&Ms, a ruler, etc. etc.). Student’s will be given lead time to make sure they can acquire these materials. If a student cannot get the needed materials, they or the parents must contact me and I will be happy to help in any way that I can.
Other materials for the course:
· Binder for all your notes
· Graph paper. Lots of graph paper (this is the paper you will use for notes as well)
· Something to color with (markers, crayons, pencils, etc.) should have at least 10 colors
Classes each week will comprise roughly of two lessons, two data sets, and a lab or experiment. Data sets will be done in groups. They will be graded as quizzes. The grading in this course will be on a point scale as follows:
· Tests: 100 points
· Quizzes: 30-60 points (most being closer to 30)
· Homework: 5 points each. Homework will be graded as either incomplete (0 points), partially completed (2.5 points) or complete (5 points). Some homework grades will be questions on the reading from the previous night.
· Project: at the end of the course there will be a project on data that you will collect and analyze. It will be broken down into different components of varying worth, however, combined this project will be worth a good portion of your grade.
· YOUR FINAL IS WORTH 20% OF YOUR GRADE IN THIS CLASS.
