SAWORD Edward George

Company Quartermaster Sergeant, (CQM) T/70216, served with 308 Res. Motor Transport Coy., R.A.S.C.

Died between 26 & 27 April 1941, aged 36.

Reported missing, presumed killed during evacuation from Greece.

Remembered on Face 8, ATHENS MEMORIAL, which stands within Phaleron War Cemetery.

Husband of Maray (also of Mumbles) of 3, Myrtle Terrace, Mumbles;

Son of James and Jennie Saword.

Father of Peter, who is pictured below at the unveiling of the Mumbles, Southend Memorial, Swansea on 11 November 2006

He was a former manager of Pickfords Ltd. and member of the Y.M.C.A. Orchestra and the Orpheus Choral Society.

He served in France and Egypt before going to Greece with 308 Reserve Motor Transport Company, Royal Army Service Corps.

During the withdrawal, from the Port of KALAMATA, his transport ship the SLAMAT and the accompanying escort destroyers, DIAMOND and WRYNECK were sunk as the result of enemy action, with few survivors and he was reported ‘missing assumed killed on April 26/27th 1941’, aged only 36
