Two plaques added to The Rood Screen Great War Memorial

In 2017, fifteen additional names of the Mumbles fallen, were inscribed on two plaques, added to the rear of the Rood Screen Memorial, on to which ninety eight names were originally inscribed and which together commemorate one hundred and thirteen fallen villagers.

14th (Service) Battalion and the Battle for Mametz Wood.

The Swansea Pals departed for the Western Front in December 1915 and became part of the 38th Welsh Division. The battalion participated in the attack on Mametz Wood in France during the First Battle of the Somme. One hundred men were lost and 300 more wounded in a single day.

During The Battle for Mametz Wood, three Mumbles Men were killed on the same day, The casualties were Samuel GAMMON, John THOMAS and George WALTERS. In later battles, they were followed by Richard BEYNON and Clifford STEEL . They are remembered on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL which bears the names of more than 72,000 men who have no known grave.

Of ‘Oakeigh’, Blackpill. He was a former member of the 6th Welsh and had seen service in France before getting a commission in the R.F.C. Son of the late John S. Brown and Emily E. Brown, of Oakleigh, Blackpill, Swansea (stepmother).

There were impressive scenes at his Mumbles Funeral. A firing party

attended, as well as a squad of men from the Shropshire Regiment

The coffin was draped with the Union Jack and conveyed from the house

on a gun carriage drawn by two horses.

Thomas DAVIES

One hundred years later, in January 2015, his great niece, Meryl Harries, her husband, Jon, and Ray Elliott, visited the CWGC Cemetery where he is buried to lay a wreath and remember his contribution to the war.
