Langland Bay Golf Club Memorial Plaque

to the memory of Lemuel Philip ACE

On 27th March 2015, a Memorial Plaque was unveiled at Langland Bay Golf Club and dedicated to the memory of Lemuel Phillip ACE. who was a Professional Golfer and Groundsman at the club, before he joined the army over 100 years ago.

The club searched for relatives of Lemuel Philip Ace, who was born in Mumbles in 1884 and lived with his wife, Catherine Elizabeth and children at 3, Forgefield Terrace, Norton, Mumbles. His parents John and Mary, of 8 Gower Place, Mumbles, had several daughters and three other sons and a son-in-law serving with the colours.

On 27th March 2015, the relatives of Mr Ace were welcomed to the club for the unveiling of the plaque. This was presented by the members of the club and is dedicated to all those who lost their lives in both wars.

It is situated on the outside wall, to the left of the main entrance of the clubhouse and overlooking the course where Lemuel would have worked all those years ago. Who knows how far he would have risen in the golfing world, if the Great War had not intervened.

LANGLAND GOLF GROUNDSMAN

The late Private Lemuel Ace of a Labour Battalion, killed in France. Formerly Groundsman at Langland Golf Links. His C.O. describes him as 'a good soldier, devoted to duty, and upon whom reliance and confidence could always be placed. He was respected and loved by all his comrades.'

He was wounded by a piece of shell in the stomach, and died on the way to hospital. Mrs Ace has three sons and a son-in-law serving with the colours.

Information has been received by Mrs Ace of Forgefield Terrace, Norton of the death in action of her husband, Pte. Lemuel Ace. Before joining up, Ace was a professional golfer and groundsman for the Langland Bay Golf Links.

He was 33 and son of Mr and Mrs Ace of Gower Place, Mumbles
