Langland Bay Golf Club Memorial Plaque

On 27th March 2015, Langland Bay Golf Club unveiled a Plaque to the memory of Lemuel Philip Ace, a Professional Golfer and Groundsman at the club, before he joined the army over 100 years ago.

The club has contacted several relatives of Lemuel Philip Ace, who was born in Mumbles in 1884 and lived with his wife, Catherine Elizabeth and children at 3, Forgefield Terrace, Norton, Mumbles. His parents John and Mary, of 8 Gower Place, Mumbles, had several daughters and three other sons and a son-in-law serving with the colours.

The club succeeded in its aim to make contact with relatives of Mr Ace and welcome them to the club for the unveiling of the plaque, which was presented by the members of the club and is also dedicated to all those who lost their lives in both wars.

Lemuel Philip Ace enlisted in Mumbles and served as a Private in the Kings (Liverpool Regiment) and was aged 33, when he died of his wounds from a shell splinter on 30th October 1917.

He is buried at Solferino Farm Cemetery, Brierlen, near Ieper, (The Ypres Salient) known to all Tommies as 'Wipers'.
