Enlisted Swansea.

Born in Brynau Cottage Blackpill, about 1883, the son of Samuel HARRIS (1842-1897) (a mariner and Agricultural labourer).

His mother was Elizabeth MEYRICK (born 1842 Oystermouth. His parents married Dec qtr 1872 Swansea (11a 1132)

He had six older siblings Mary Jane, Harriet, John, James, Elizabeth and Thomas.

They are all traceable in the Oystermouth censuses.

HIs father Samuel died and was buried in Oystermouth on 4th Sept 1897


The 1911 census, below, shows Richard George HARRIS employed as a garden labourer, living with his widowed mother and two older brothers at Bryau Cottage, Blackpill.

A modern view of Brynau Cottage

Part of the RHS of the property would have been stables. Mains services and electric, were connected in recent years, when the cottage were extended and modernised.

The 1844 Tithe map, shown as Brinney Cottage, but later known as Brynau.

N.B. - Later, the old Gower road from Brinney Inn to Brynau, was closed and the Mayals Road was constructed, from The Mumbles Road to Brynau, without entering The Clyne Estate (now Gardens).
