The Swansea Pals departed for the Western Front in December 1915 and became part of the 38th Welsh Division. The battalion participated in the attack on Mametz Wood in France during the First Battle of the Somme. One hundred men were lost and 300 more wounded in a single day
Three Mumbles Men were killed on the same day, They were Samuel GAMMON, John THOMAS and George WALTERS. In later battles, they were followed by Richard BEYNON and Clifford STEEL

Private 667, 2nd Welsh Regiment
Killed in Action 31st October 1914, aged 34, near GHELUVELDT, BELGIUM during The First Battle of Ypres. ( Click the link for CWGC campaigns page).

Wife, Margaret of 9 St Johns Rd, Manselton.
Later Margaret remarried and became Mrs. Ford and lived at 62, Dinas Street, Plasmarl.
One of six children of John and Ellen, later of 4, Boarspit Lane (now Glen Road).
Born in Village Lane, Southend, Swansea, enlisted Cardiff.
However the tragic news had not reached them, by the time this letter arrived:
The Cambrian Daily Leader, reported on 7 November 1914 that Private 667 Arthur Ace 2nd Bat. Welsh Regiment, writing home to his parents in Swansea, says he is perfectly well and happy and although he has been in many engagements has escaped without a scratch.
Mrs. Ace received an official communication from the War Office on 26 January 1915, informing her that Private Ace had been missing since October. Arthur Ace was a pre-war regular soldier called from reserve early in August and arrived in France in September.
Lemuel Philip Ace
On 27th March 2015, a Memorial Plaque was unveiled at Langland Bay Golf Club and dedicated to the memory of Lemuel Phillip ACE and all those who lost their lives in both wars

Information has been received by Mrs Ace of Forgefield Terrace, Norton of the death in action of her husband, Pte. Lemuel Ace. Before joining up, Ace was a professional golfer and groundsman for the Langland Bay Golf Links.

LANGLAND GOLF GROUNDSMAN
The late Private Lemuel Ace of a Labour Battalion, killed in France. Formerly Groundsman at Langland Golf Links. His C.O. describes him as 'a good soldier, devoted to duty, and upon whom reliance and confidence could always be placed. He was respected and loved by all his comrades.'
He was wounded by a piece of shell in the stomach, and died on the way to hospital. Mrs Ace has three sons and a son-in-law serving with the colours.

Wife, Emily Mary Baglow née BASKETT, aged 37, from Bishopston, 22 Woodville Rd. Four children: Catherine aged 11, Harold aged 9, Constance aged 8 and Sidney George age 5 Their second child William Alfred, died age 4 in 1902.
Enlisted 1915 in Canada, when gold mining, with a partner. Formerly R.N.R. Alfred's occupation is recorded as Mariner in the Merchant Navy
When he enlisted, he had taken 10 years off his age, but he was revealed as being over 50 years of age when he became ill in France in 1918 and was transferred back to England.
His age could be confirmed by the Parish Record, which stated that Alfred, the son of William, a Mariner and Mary Ann, was baptised on 31st October 1869 in All Saints' Church and lived at Norton

Richard was born in Mumbles Dec qtr 1882 son of Phillip & Elizabeth BEYNON. Richard's father died 1887-1891. He appears in1891, 1901 & 1911 in Mumbles censuses showing he had seven siblings and that he was a postman.

Mrs. Beynon has received official notification that her husband must be presumed killed. He was
reported missing on 7th October 1916 since when on news of him has been received. Deceased was formerly engaged at the Post Office Swansea.

He joined the Grenadier Guards on September 17th 1914, and was formerly 19285.
Was one of the first recruits when he enlisted in the Welsh Guards on its’ formation in 1915
He was said to be remembered as 'rather reserved and always inclined to look on the more serious side of things'.

Born: 1895, Swansea, Birth Registration Swansea Mar qtr 1895 (11a 1053). One of ten children born to Father: George Washington DAVIE a Colliery Owner and agent from Pontypridd and his mother Susan E. from Lanarkshire. The latter may have been behind his decision to join a Scottish Regiment
1901 aged 6 with large family at 210 Eaton Crescent, Swansea
1911 aged 16 at 'Normanhurst', Langland Road Mumbles. His elder brothers were also employed in the coal business. Enlisted 1914.
Brother of Quartermaster Sergeant Davie and Private William Davie, both with the Canadians
'Swansea Battalion,' and ‘Of the Mayals’ are inscribed on the back of the photograph.

He was commissioned in the R.N.A.S. in 1914.
Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross,
‘For great skill and bravery as a fighting pilot’.
Day was ‘shot down by six German aircraft which he attacked single-handed out to sea.
He hit the enemy and they hit his machine, which burst into flames. . .he nose dived, flattened out and landed on the water. He climbed out of his machine and waved his fellow pilots back to base. . .’
His body was never found

The M/5 was sunk, possibly torpedoed, soon after leaving port.
There were a few survivors but Frank was not amongst them, even though he was a strong swimmer.

Talking of the Rood Screen, his only child, Louie Hardy, recalls that,
‘When I was a kid, I went to All Saints Church three times on a Sunday,
I was usually early and I always had to put my finger on my father's name, for luck.’

David was one of ten children.

Killed in Action aged 36 on 12th March 1915

Married Lilian (Lily) ARNOLD, from Lancashire, Mar qtr 1909 Swansea. They had two children: Nicholas, b. Mar qtr 1909 & Robert, b. Dec qtr 1910. Living in Oystermouth at 1911 census
Son of Robert & Sarah Hixson of Newton
Born: 9 November 1879 at Newton, enlisted Swansea.
A year later, on 21st February 1916, The South Wales Daily Post reported – MUMBLES SOLDIER’S FATE
Mrs. HIXSON. Nottage Road, Newton, has been advised by the War Office that nothing further having been heard of her husband, Prt. NICHOLAS HIXSON, missing since February, 1915, his death must be presumed. The letter was accompanied by a message of sympathy from Lord Kitchener.

Remembered on the CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL.

He received a call immediately war was declared and left at a few hours notice. He was one of 497 men and 26 officers and her captain, who were lost when the ‘HAWKE’ was sunk by a torpedo from the submarine U9.

‘Mr. Hughes first came to Mumbles as a Coastguard and since finishing his time with that service about six years ago, had carried on the trade of a joiner and carpenter.’
One daughter was a local teacher and the logbook records her being given time off after the above events.

Son of William and Elizabeth, Clifton Terrace.
Mr. & Mrs. Jenkins still had four other sons in the Navy,
William, Harry, Ivor and Ernest. A son-in–law Mr. W. Bullock
was killed some months back.
His brother Ernest was killed on 11 November 1917.

The only son of Lewis and Sarah Ann Jones, of 1, Beaufort Terrace, Blackpill, Swansea, the Blackpill Postman.

Wyndham worked at the tin sheds on Swansea Docks and joined the colours shortly after the outbreak of war. Some months ago he was invalided home with a bullet would in the leg returning to the front in November [1916]. He was very well known and liked in the district and at one time played for the Mumbles association Football Team.
A letter later received from an officer stated that he had been killed by a German Trench Mortar Shell while leaving the trenches.

His occupation before the war was a Building Apprentice,
he had served in France for 8mths. One brother is a Sergeant
in the Royal Garrison Artillery who has been in France since Mons.
