Scoring Rubric

You will be making a short speech about your research topic. You must develop a slide show, poster or other visual to add interest to your speech.

Here are the steps to follow.

• 1.  Choose something about your subject you think will also be of interest to your audience.

  2. Make a list of what makes this subject so special. What makes it special to you, and what might interest others.

  3. Put the main points you want to cover on a note card. This will act as the outline to your speech and can be used to help you during your presentation. Notes help a speaker to stay on track.

  4. Write down what you want to say. You will not be reading this speech, but this will help you when you practice.  You may use parts of your report, but the focus should be on interesting things you learned about your subject.  Be sure to start your speech with a "hook".  Wrap up your speech with a conclusion. 

  5. Decide what kind of visual will add interest to your speech. Your visual is supposed to help your audience get a better understanding of your subject. It should also help to keep your audience's attention.

  6. Create your visual.

  7. Practice your speech. You should be able to talk for 2-3 minutes about your subject. Make sure you include your visuals in your practice.

Speeches will be given in class on 3/31 and 4/1.   

Things to consider.

Slide show: You should have 4-5 graphics that will add to your speech. If you create bullets for your slides, make them very short. They should be like notes that help you to keep your speech on track. There will be no music in your slide show.

Poster or other visual: Make sure any graphics or text are large enough to be seen in the back of the room. 

Be creative in your choice of subject and visuals. No one wants to hear a boring speech.

POINTS FOR EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING

• • Maintain eye contact with your audience - do not read your talk.

  • Vary your voice - avoid speaking in a monotone and demonstrate enthusiasm for your subject.

  • Use a loud voice and enunciate your words clearly.

  • Use physical gestures appropriately but don’t overuse them.

  • Stand up straight - no leaning, etc.

  • Stay within the time limit.
