The purpose of this task is to show how well you can follow the steps of the writing process to continually improve a piece of writing.
You may choose to write a story, a mini-report, a procedural piece, or an essay. If you choose to write a story, you are limited to 5 pages of writing.
Your grade will be based on the following.
How well you follow the steps of the writing process.
How well you follow the Standard English Conventions of Writing (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar).
The quality of your final product. Is it well organized; does it make sense; does it have a beginning, middle and end?
Steps of the writing process:
Plan: gather ideas to use in your piece. This must be passed in on paper or shared with Ms. D. as a document. Possible plans may be:

notes
outline
story map
Draft: begin writing your piece. Write this draft in sentences and paragraphs. Spell and punctuate as well as you can without interrupting your ideas.
Read your draft: make sure it makes sense and says what you want it to say before you move to the next step.
Conference: share your piece with a peer to get ideas to improve your writing. You must show evidence of this conference. This evidence will be comments on a document or written comments if your writing is on paper. If you are reading someone's writing for them, make sure you write comments that will help to improve the message. This may include questions you still have about the content of the piece or parts that are confusing. You might have suggestions about the lead, details, events, etc.
Revise: make changes to your writing to improve it.
Read your draft again. If you still are not satisfied, continue to work on it. You may share your writing again if it will be helpful. If you are satisfied with the content, move to the next step.
Self-edit: correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar. Your conventions grade will be based on this step, so it is important to do the best you can.
Share your writing with Ms. D.: Hand in your "Draft 2" on Ms. D's website. Make sure the document is shared with Ms. D. Tell Ms. D. you have shared and are ready for a Teacher Edit. While waiting for her to read it, work on other LA work.
Final Draft: After Ms. D. has given you comments on your piece, make final revisions to complete your final draft. Hand it in again as "Final."
