For this unit you will be writing poems about winter. This may include winter holidays, sports, activities, or winter in general,
*You will write five poems, a diamante poem, a quiet poem, a tanka, and two in any format you choose.
*You will choose one of your poems to use for a Poetry Bag. These bags will be used to decorate the tables at the Senior Citizen Winter Concert. Click here to see examples.
Things to remember about poetry.
Poetry speaks to the senses. Use precise words to create images of what you see, hear, feel, etc.
Poetry speaks to the heart. It goes beyond thinking about the subject. It asks you to feel something.
Poetry loos different from prose (regular writing).
Poetry sounds different from prose. Pay attention to sound. Use devices such as repetition, rhyming, alliteration, consonance and onomatopoeia to make your poem pleasing to the ear.
Diamante Poems
Diamante Poems are written in the form of a diamond. They may be based on synonyms or antonyms. It will be easier to write your winter poem based on a synonym.

Quiet Poems:
A quiet poem uses imagery to describe a quiet moment or scene. The writer is connected to the images in the final two lines.

Tanka:
The haiku was originally only the start of a poem called the tanka. The tanka gives a more complete view of the poet's thoughts by ading two more lines of seven syllables.
