Journals will be scored based on the level of thought in the responses. The amount of time spent reading will affect your journal score if the amount of reading you have done makes it difficult to show your thinking. Option 2 verifications will also be scored with the following rubric.
Rubric for Journal Comments
E (Exceeds Standard) - The overall or majority of entries reflect deep thinking and/or insights.
M (Meets Standard) - The overall or majority of entries reflect the expected level of thinking. This includes connections, reactions to character, plot and/or style, making predictions and later evaluating their accuracy, and awareness of comprehension difficulties, etc.
P (Partially Meets Standard) - Journal entries are mostly summaries with some thinking shown OR too few entries to show adequate thinking.
D (Does Not Meet Standard) - Journal entries are summaries OR there is a minimal number of entries.
A second reading score will be based on the average number of minutes a student spends reading each week. Students are expected to read 150 minutes each week. Preferable this reading is spread out over four or five days to help develop better fluency.
Rubric for Minutes Read
E (Exceeds Standard) - Student reads an average of 200 or more minutes per week.
M (Meets Standard) - Student reads an average of 140-199 minutes per week.
P (Partially Meets Standard) - Student reads an average of 80-139 minutes per week.
D (Does Not Meet Standard) Student reads an average of less than 80 minutes per week.
