I find Rowling's new book series about Cormoran Strike to be excellent, and aside from reviewing them, have also written a few pieces analyzing them and comparing them with Goblet of Fire. I am thrilled that Rowling's new series is providing new fodder for writing!
Initial reviews of each book:
Analytical essays of Cuckoo's Calling:
The Psychopaths - Bristow, Riddle, and Crouch is an analysis of the main villains in Rowling's books and how terrifying Rowling paints the picture of a psychopath. The villain of The Cuckoo's Calling, John Bristow, combines the craziness of Voldemort and Barty Crouch Jr., and I do a joint character analysis of the three. Written October 2013.
The Suspects is an in-depth analysis of all the suspects in The Cuckoo's Calling, discussing both my initial views while reading, and what can be discerned with the benefit of hindsight. I find TCC to be an echo of Goblet of Fire (also a classic whodunit), and talk about the parallels between the two. Written July 2014.
The Minor Characters is a character analysis of all the supporting players in The Cuckoo's Calling, and their parallels in the HP series. Written August 2014.
Analytical essays of Troubled Blood:
“Troubled Blood” Foreshadows Troubled Times discusses how Jo pivoted to make the Cormoran Strike series a commentary on politics in the 2010s, and what that means for the series going forward. Written October 2020.
The Themes of Troubled Blood examines how deftly Jo wove her key themes through the text of Troubled Blood. Written October 2020.
Analytical essays of Ink Black Heart:
The Antagonists of Book 6 compares the villain of Ink Black Heart with the three antagonists of Half-Blood Prince. Written October 2022.
We've also had a lot of great discussion of Cormoran Strike over on my Three Broomsticks Podcast, where I got to recruit fans who know the series even better than I do to talk it all out!
