Back to the old days
On my 10th I started drawing. With pencil and pen I first made comics. On my 12th I got interested in oil paintings. On my 16th I roamed all galleries in Utrecht. I've seen a lot now andlater even had art history. That was on the advertising drawing school. This school told exactly what you could and could not draw. It was very tight and strict. It gave me an aversion to all external influence. A side effect what more free people have in common. I left the school, but my aversion of the commercial world remained intact. Today we see a lot of picturescome by, much of the same. People shout "That is beautiful" while they already look at the next picture. In the old world we would watch for hours at one painting or drawing. We had nothing more..Above ; The Journey Home ( thuisvaart ) by Johfra Bosschart ( 1919-1998 ) This painter and his truly insane but genius paintings have always inspired me a lot since 1980. Most know him from the zodiac series or the meta-realists. People refer to his works as surrealism, it's basically psychic realism. I have seen them in real life. You can spend hours looking at one painting. Well it should. I asked the painter who I met at an exhibition in 1989, how long he worked on one painting. Sometimes a year, sometimes more, and even three years, he said. Check him in his virtual museum through the work index or biography. Everything is also in dutch on site. More on him you find here ; The Johfra Museum or Visonary the Gallery and on the English Wiki
I live in Tilburg, which is close to Kaasheuvel. Here lays the Efteling.( website ; link ) A fairytail themed amusement park for children. Very much is designed following the drawings of Anton Pieck. In my youth Anton Pieck was an inspiring example. My grandmother had books and works made by him. So now in my temporary room some of his reproduced art is on my wall. He was the reason i started drawing in a certain style, with pencil and pen.
