Some background info: Anton "Tony" Blau was born in 1904 in Franklin Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Joseph Blau (who was an immigrant at the age of one in 1862) and Anna Gruber (who was born in Bear Creek Township, Wisconsin). Anton's grandparents on his father's side, Michael Blau and Barbara Dobmeier, were immigrants born in Gleissenberg (Kreis Cham), Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany. Anton's grandparent's on his mother's side were Michael Gruber, born in Prosdorf, and Franziska Ruhland, born in Untergrafenried - both villages in Kreis Cham, Bavaria, Germany.

Anton farmed two miles north of Plain, Wisconsin, on the farm that his father Joseph Blau had purchased in 1896. Anton enjoyed singing all of his life and taught himself to play the fiddle (violin) without reading notes. In 1926, at age 22, he was a soloist with the Men's Choir in the Christmas program at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Plain, Wisconsin.

Tony Blau and his friend Joseph "Sepp" Lechner provided musical entertainment in the Plain area during the mid- to late-1920s into the 1930s. As Tony explained in 1975, "I and Joe Lechner were the only music around Plain, I mean, that was all the music there was. And we played for just about every dog fight like church picnics, house parties, barn raisins', garage dances, we played weddings. And then our kids started to grow up." From 1953 to 1954, Tony and some of his 8 children had a radio program on Sunday mornings called "Blau Family Hour" on WRDB-Reedsburg. Tony explained, "I was the German singer. I sang German songs because at that time I couldn't hardly talk English." Some of his favorite songs were, "Lieber Anton," "Es War Im Böhmerwald," "Fensterstockhiasl," and "Du, Du liegst mir am Herzen."

It was Sepp Lechner who taught Tony some of the more interesting German songs. Sepp was born in 1901 in Treffelstein (Kreis Cham), Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Georg Lechner and Anna Turban. Sepp was 22 years old when he immigrated to America in 1923. About 1924, Sepp found his way to Plain and eventually began farming. "Lieber Anton" is one of the songs that Sepp taught Tony. It was a fitting song, as Sepp began the song with "Lieber Anton" (dear Anton), with Anton replying, "Ja, was ist dann?" (ya, what is it?). Sepp and Tony also sang with Ed Laubmeier (son of George Laubmeier and Mary Kraemer), and Tony's brother George Blau.
