An interesting book with lots of pictures:

Erinnerungen an unsere Heimatgemeinde: Grafenried, Anger, Seeg und Haselberg. Author: Hans Laubmeier. Details here.

An awesome book filled with the history of Grafenried and Untergrafenried including house owners in Untergrafenried, pictures, and more (in German).

Kapellenweihe Untergrafenried, Festschrift und Ortsgeschichte. Pfingsten 1981. Verfasser: Peter Wagner, Herzogau. Druck: G. A. Fuß, Waldmünchen. 56 pages. (May be out of print)

Where is Grafenried?

Grafenried (also called Obergrafenreid) is an extinct village located in today's Czech Republic in the county of Domažlice (formerly in the county of Bischofteinitz / Horšovský Týn) in the region of Plzen (Plzeň). It is located north of the Bavarian village of Waldmünchen, and east of the villages of Treffelstein and Tiefenbach (all three Bavarian villages are in Kreis Cham, Bavaria, Germany). Click here to see a Google map. Grafenried is pronounced as GRAHF-en-reed. Video from 2016 showing Grafenried and the cemetery here

Grafenried, Obergrafenried, and Untergrafenried

Before 1770, Grafenried was one town. Later, Grafenried was divided into two towns: Untergrafenried and Obergrafenried. The east part of Grafenried, called Obergrafenried, belonged to Bohemia. The church records for Grafenried, Obergrafenried and Untergrafenried are in Ast (near Waldmünchen) in Kreis Cham, Germany. After 1770, Obergrafenried had it's own parish in Czech Republic; these church records are now in the archive in Klentsch/Klenci in Czech Republic.

Early records show the town name spelled as "Grauenrieth." Grafenried was known as Obergrafenried ("Ober" meaning "over" or "above") because it was located on a small hill, a little higher than Untergrafenried ("Unter" meaning "under" or "lower" with farm land directly adjacent to the Czech Republic border. In early times, Untergrafenried was given the nickname "Dirrmal" (also spelled "Dürrmaul" and "Dirmaal") meaning "thin mouthed" as people were malnourished because the land was not especially fruitful. Untergrafenried today (2021) is a small village located in Bavaria, Germany.

The distance between the two villages (Untergrafenried and Grafenried) is less than a half mile, or 10 to 15 minutes by foot. The Czech border is currently open (there are no guards and no toll office), so one can walk freely over the border from Germany into Czech (take your passport along). For special events held in Grafenried (Masses, pilgrimages, hiking tours, geocaching, etc.), it is possible to drive from Untergrafenried to Grafenried, but parking is limited. The road may not be fully tarred. It's best to park on the outskirts of Untergrafenried and walk over the border to Grafenried.

Grafenried had a church and belonged to various parishes. Borders and ownership frequently changed. Where did ancestors attend Mass?

In the year 950, Grafenried belonged to Bavaria. In 1266, the Bohemian army destroyed it. In 1708, Grafenried became part of the Kingdom of Bohemia.

The Catholic church at Grafenried was named St. Georg and was built in 1753 to replace an older chapel. In 1755, Lutherans of Regensburg presented the parish with "Schönen Maria von Grafenried" (Beautiful Maria of Grafenried), a painting dating to the 16th century. At some point, Grafenried belonged to Bavaria, and the church was part of the Waldmünchen parish; then later belonged to the parish of Ast (west of Waldmuenchen) until 1782.

On March 3, 1764, the Bavarian government made a pact (called the bayerisch-böhmischen Grenzvertrag) with the Kingdom of Austria to move their borders. The agreement was signed by the Austrian Queen, Kaiserin Maria-Theresia, and the Bavarian Duke, Kurfürsten Max Joseph III. In the agreement, some Bavarian towns were "moved" to the Bohemian government, and some Bohemian towns were "moved" to the Bavarian government. With this pact, the border of the two countries passed directly between Untergrafenried and Obergrafenried, placing Obergrafenried in Bohemia and Untergrafenried in Bavaria. Residents of Untergrafenried still walked over the border to Grafenried to attend Masses, get married, have baptisms, and attend funerals at St. Georg. Some may have gone to other area churches in Bavaria.

Between 1782 and 1786, St. Georg belonged to the parish of Wassersuppen (Nemanice), Bezirk Taus, in Bohemia.

On September 28, 1808, a royal decree declared that Grafenried should be a separate parish. The church records kept by the priest at Grafenried are available online (how to access these records is below). In 1906, the church at Grafenried was renovated. A map and list of house numbers and names from the parish of Grafenried is here (members only as of 9/2017).

The parish of Grafenried (Czech name Lučina) included these villages which were also completely destroyed after Word War II: Anger (Czech name Úpor); Seeg (Czech name Pila); and Haselberg (Czech name Lískovec). More about these villages can be found at the German Bohemian Heritage Society website here (site gone as of 9/2017).

Current and historic maps of the Grafenried area can be found at www.mapy.cz

To see an historic map, click "Hledani" ("search"), then type Untergrafenried into the search box. Choose "část obce Untergrafenried" - now you'll see Untergrafenried on the map. Click "Zmenit mapu" in the top left corner. Click the thumbnail image that looks historic (Z 19. stoleti). The historic map is dated 1836-1852 and is from the 2nd Military Survey Austrian State Archive. You can scroll and drag the map around to see villages.

Your ancestor's baptism, marriage, and death records could be in the parish of Ast, parish of Waldmuenchen, parish of Wassersuppen, or parish of Grafenried. Research in the Grafenried and Wassersuppen records is easy to do from the comfort of your own home because these records are all online! How to find these records online is described in detail further below - with clickable links to church books!

Archive at Klencí pod Cerchovem

For "recent" Grafenried church records after ca 1870 to ca 1946, you'll need to visit or write to the Urad mestyse - city archive (Stadtarchiv) - at Klencí pod Cerchovem (German name: Klentsch) in the county Domazlice (Okres Domažlice) in Czech Republic. Requesting recent records can be difficult. The "Matrika" (English: Civil Registry) (German: Matrikel) office requires that you show baptism records for each line of ancestors - meaning you'll need to show your own baptism record, your parent's baptism records, your grandparent's baptism records, and so on, back to the ancestor you are searching for. The Grafenried parish no longer existed after ca 1946 because everyone in town was expelled.

If your ancestor immigrated from Bohemia to America during the time Bohemia was in the Kingdom of Austria, he/she may have been referred to as being Austrian or German or Bohemian.

Grafenried known as Lučina

The Kingdom of Bohemia ceased to exist in 1918, meaning Grafenried was now in Czechoslovakia. It may have been at this time when predominantly German towns (with mainly German citizens) were given a town name of the same or similar meaning in the Czech language. As early as 1848, German towns which had a mix of both Czech and German citizens were known by both their German and Czech names. The German name Grafenried (Obergrafenried) was known by the Czech name Lucina (spelled "Lučina" in Czech language). Lučina means "grassland" or "poor grassland" while "ried" (from Grafen"ried") means "a place cleared of trees and shrubbery" or "wet terrain." [Reinhard Riepl. Wörterbuch zur Familien- und Heimatforschung in Bayern und Österrich. 2004. Page 325: "Ried" 1) von Bäumen u. Strauchwerk gereinigter Platz. 2) feuchtes Gelände.]

When Hitler's army occupied Czechoslovakia, the border towns including Grafenried and Wassersuppen were made a part of the German Reich and belonged to the county of Eisenstein in Bavaria in 1938; in 1940, these villages were part of the county of Waldmünchen. By 1939, Grafenried had a population of 222 (mainly German-speaking residents) and included 40 homes, a school, a brewery, and St. Georg Catholic Church, rectory, and cemetery.

Grafenried (Lučina) was destroyed

World War II ended in 1945. From 1945 to 1948, Germans living in Czechoslovakian towns were inhumanely deported out of Czechoslovakia into West and East Germany. This time was known as the expulsion of Sudetenland people. See more about Sudetenland here. A few Germans were allowed to stay in Czech. Around 1950, the Czech military destroyed the abandoned villages of Grafenried / Obergrafenried (Lucina), Anger (Upor), Seeg (Pila) and Haselberg (Liskovec). Czechoslovakia was a communist state from 1948 to 1989, and the Czech-German borders were closed for several years. A border control office existed in Untergrafenried until 1968.

St. Georg Catholic Church in Grafenried was blown up by Czech military in 1959. A priest, possibly Father Jan Harant from nearby Klentsch, had saved two paintings before the senseless destruction. The two paintings were taken to Wassersuppen (Nemanice) and were placed in Mariae Heimsuchung (aka St. Johannes Nepomuk) Catholic church. One painting called "Maria mit der Rose" ("Maria with the Rose"), author unknown, originally was on a side altar at St. Georg church at Grafenried. This painting was restored by Miroslav Zvonar in 1997. The second saved painting, "Heilige Georg" ("Saint Georg") was originally from the high altar at St. Georg (painted by Eges in 1896; restored by Miroslav Zvonar in 1996). Father Franz Wittmann was the last priest to serve at Wassersuppen (from 1938 to 1946).

On January 1, 1993, the country of Czechoslovakia split into the independent countries of Czech Republic and Slovakia. On Dec. 21, 2007, Czech became a member of the Schengen area, and the Czech-German borders were no longer being controlled.

When it became easier for Germans to enter Czech, people who were born and/or lived in Grafenried or who had ancestors from the extinct parish villages began to meet in Grafenried for special outdoor Masses, hiking tours, and remembrances. My personal photos of Grafenried among a collection here (until Nov. 2017) and one my videos of a Grafenried gathering is here in which everyone sang "Es war im Böhmerwald."

In July 2011, Helmut Roith of Edlmühle by Treffelstein and his team of helpers began to dig out the ruins of St. Georg Catholic Church. By the spring of 2012, the excavation work was finished and a Mass was held at the site of St. Georg church in April 2012. Roith continued with excavation work and started working with the ruins of the parish rectory and other buildings. Cemetery restoration also took place about the same time - the entrance wall was repaired and many trees were cleared out.

Czech abbreviations:

N = Narození (Births - Baptisms)

O = Oddaní (Marriages)

Z = Zemrelí (Deaths)

Annexes/Attachments are pages that were glued on.

fol. = folio. Folio in parish books are the left and right side of the page. Below, I used the image numbers rather than folio numbers because in many cases, the priest renumbered book pages and some pages have two folio numbers. Providing links and image numbers was simpler.

RECORDS FOR WASSERSUPPEN (NEMANICE)

Portafontium has 33 church books for Wassersuppen (Nemanice) and area villages, with marriage, baptism and death records. If the relative you are looking for lived in the Untergrafenried and Grafenried (Lucina) area, church records could be held by the Parish of Ast in Kreis Cham, Bavaria, Germany, because Untergrafenried residents may have attended Mass in the church at Ast as well as in Grafenried before the border changed.

As of July 2023, Ast records were scanned from books at Bischöfliches Zentralarchiv in Regensburg and were made available for free at https://data.matricula-online.eu/en/deutschland/regensburg/ast/

Another option for finding records is to ask at the parish office in Ast which is believed to possess a small Grafenried church book ("Taufbuchlein" with an index) that may have been never filmed and is only available in their office.
