John Conrad Ruskauff
LaValle Letter, January 6, 1874
Ed. Free Press: - A very distressing accident occurred here on Friday last, by which a very estimable neighbor lost his life; a recital of which, it is hoped, will warn others against standing in front while holding a frightened team of horses. Wm. Roscoff, living near Cazenovia, came here on that day with a load of R R Ties. Before unloading, the horses became frightened at a passing train; to prevent them from running off, he stepped in front and took the horses by the bits; they dashed forward about 20 feet, throwing Mr. Roscoff with such force on the frozen ground as to break in his skull and otherwise injure him. He was taken up by those present, and supposed to be dead, but came to partial consciousness, in which state he was taken to his home by his friends, and died on Sunday evening. Yours, K."

(Our correspondent opens with a detailed account of the accident to Mr. Roscoff; which, as we have it already in type from another source, we omit.)
