More Addition and Subtraction

In this topic, students will:

• write and solve addition and subtraction equations to solve a word problem

• decompose numbers 5 to 9 to solve problems

• learn ways to make 10

Vocabulary:

Operation - the operation tells us what to do with the numbers. Addition and subtraction are types of operations.

At-home Practice:

Supplies:

• deck of playing cards

Remove all face cards from the deck. Flip over the remaining cards, so that the numbers are facing down. The first player flips over two cards and adds the numbers. If the two cards equal 10, the player keeps the cards. If they do not equal 10, the player flips the cards back over. The next player then goes. Keep playing until all of the cards are gone or you can't make any more sums of 10.
